A detailed record of Union battles and casualties prepared by the Illinois Central Railroad for the twenty-first annual encampment of the nation's largest veteran's organization. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was founded in 1866 in Illinois, around the pillars of charity, fraternity, and loyalty, and quickly became "the preeminent veterans' organization'' in the nation. Inscribed on front panel of lid in black ink: "For Polly and Henry with my love. Helmet, New York. 14. 3. 1977. P. S. A set of real French postcards.". A presentation copy of an early and exceedingly rare Newton publication, comprising twenty erotic postcards reproducing his photographs, inscribed to the noted fashion editor and stylist Polly Allen Mellen and her husband. The first edition of this important book on the culture of the Penobscot people of Maine. Joseph Nicolar, a Penobscot author, undertook in this work, as he states in his preface, to answer the question "where did the red man come from?" and to "remove the fear that the life of the red man will pass away unwritten."
