Description:
[Naples]: [s.n.], 1850. vi, [2]pp, 72ff. The main body of the text with printed music to versos, and libretti to rectos. Contemporary (perhaps original) purple cloth, gilt, titled to spine and upper board. Marbled endpapers. Marked (with some remains of what is presumably candle wax to lower board), slightly faded and rubbed, small wormhole at the head of spine, bumping to corners. A rare survival of a Neapolitan-printed psalmody/hymnal produced for the use of the English Protestant congregation at Naples, 'revised by Daniel Holmes, organist to the chapel'. Traditionally a room in the house of the Consul-General was provided for the English of Naples to worship, but with the reduction in stature of the Consul during the early nineteenth-century pressure mounted for the construction of a permanent - and separate - home. Despite strong ties between the Bourbon monarchy and the English establishment, disputes between the congregation and the government of Naples ensued. Newly built premises… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Printed for Fletcher and Hanwell, 1795. vi, [2], 147pp, [1]. With half-title. Disbound. A clean and crisp copy, with only the slightest of dust-soiling to half-title. As a fellow to Oxford University, Church of England clergyman John Napleton (1738/9-1817) established his reputation first as an educational reformer, calling attention to the failings of his own college, Brasenose (at which he had matriculated in 1755), and the higher education establishment as a whole. Napleton's concerns regarding the curriculum would lead him to publish several critical pamphlets. Ever one to promote the support of students and the provision good intellectual training, Napleton would subsequently produce works, as here, with the aim of preparing students seeking a pastoral office, and on the duties and conduct expected of a member of the clergy. Description:
Montpellier: l'Imprimerie de Mme. Picot, [1812]. Single leaf broadside. With the Imperial eagle vignette to head. Early vertical and horizontal folds, edges uncut. A trifle browned, single small hole touching text, without loss of sense. An original example, published in Montpelier, of the twentieth bulletin of the Grand Armée in Russia. These bulletins were issued by Napoleon in order to communicate progress of his most significant military campaign to date to the French public. Immensely significant propaganda tools, these bulletins explained the prevailing conditions; in this case, reporting on the French capture of Moscow in the preceding days. Although not the political capital of Russia, the city's fall represented a severe blow to defending army. As the bulletin notes, 'Moscou est l'entreport de l'Asie et de l'Europe; ses magasins etaient immenses; toutes les maisons etaient approvisionnees de tout pour huit mois'. Somewhat ominously, given the benefit… Read More

Description:
[s.i.]: [s.n.], [s.d., c. 1850] Single sheet, printed on one side only. A trifle creased. Small tear to beginning of first line of text (without loss of sense). An apparently unrecorded slip song lamenting the fate of Napoleon. The ballad casts the emperor as a flawed and tragic hero, betrayed by those whom he trusted and ultimately abandoned, yet ever gallant despite defeat. The final verse rejoices in the return of his remains from St. Helena to Paris in 1840: 'The bones of brave Napoleon that lay mouldering in the grave / In that great city of Paris a tomb has been erected / So splendidly, to contain his ashes and his heart, / Rich and poor who go that way, do joyfully tribute pay, / To the immortal memory of Napoleon Bonaparte'. The Bodleian Libraries Broadside Ballads Online records an entirely different setting of the song (Bod21485, Roud Number: V497). . Dimensions 110 x 260 mm.

London: Printed for J. Hatchard, 1808. [iii]-xxiv, 448pp. Without half-title. Finely bound in contemporary marbled calf, contrasting morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Marbled endpapers. Slightly rubbed, joints cracked, nevertheless a handsome copy. Monogram bookplate to FEP. An anonymous poetical account, composed by a naval officer during a recuperative period on shore, of the maiden or 'shakedown' cruise of a newly launched British Man of War in 1805. Commencing in September, the epic poem culminates in the following month in the wake of victory at Trafalgar, and the news of Admiral Lord Nelson's death in battle. The combination of lively patriotism and detailed explanatory notes led contemporary reviewers to recommend this title to those 'about to fit out a young Midshipman for the service' (British Critic).
