An association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the title page: "For Guzz--Last of the big spenders--with every good wish from a grateful beneficiary--Charlton, May 1975." Uncommon signed. Walter Guzzardi, Jr. was a journalist and editor, including for Fortune magazine (perhaps part of the allusion in the inscription), and the author fo several books. Probably he worked with Ogburn as an editor and "spent" in that way, too. Charlton Ogburn won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1967 for The Winter Beach, his tour of the Atlantic Shore. Later he moved to Virginia and this book was the result. Inscribed in the year of publication on the half title: "For William Trueheart, a fellow veteran, with the best of wishes, Charlton Ogburn, 1966." This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing. William Trueheart is probably the Trueheart who was shortly after the Ambassador to Nigeria and later a diplomat in Vietnam. A near fine book with some sunning to lower boards and a line of blue ink to outer text block. In a very-good-plus jacket with general wear to edges and to the folds of spine, as well as some sunning to edges, though only noticeable on white flaps. Presents great under mylar. Uncommon signed.

An apparent association copy, possibly a good one as suggested by the inscription, but unfortunately we can't  make out the last name of the recipient. Uncommon signed in any case. Ogburn won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1967 for The Winter Beach, his tour of the Atlantic Shore, and here he travels in the same "little camping bus" across the country to survey its landscape and natural history in the tradition of Roger Tory Peterson and James Fisher's Wild America (1953). Hanson's name stamp to pastedown. Near fine or better in a near fine jacket with a little rubbing to rear panel and subtle tape reinforcement to top of spine (no tears).

(Olson's handwriting admittedly can be a challenge to read, but it's gorgeous and puzzling through it, studying it, is part of the pleasure.) The slipcase still has the shrink-wrap on it. This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1974.

Ashland, WI: Sigurd Olson Institute, 1978. First edition. Softcover. An uncommon staple-bound chapbook in mustard wraps consisting of Sigurd Olson's 1958 address "The Meaning of Wilderness," given to the Utah Academy of Sciences in Provo. We are not sure if this address was collected before it appeared as the title essay of a 2001 collection (reissued in 2015). This booklet was produced in 1978 (it would appear) by the Sigurd Olson Institute at Northland College "as a gift for its friends." With three illustrations by Deb Bartl, Nina Forsythe, and Diana Tesoriere (a particularly funky pinecone drawing by Deb on the rear). 16 pages total plus wraps. Very good with a coffee spot at the top edge and sporadic creasing. Likely a scarce piece of Olson ephemera with none listed in OCLC/WorldCat.
