Three-quarters-length sepiatone portrait of Parepa-Rosa in a Victorian dress, low neckline, embroidered collar and cuffs, looking slightly to her right. Printed below the image is "Gurney & Son, Fifth Ave, N.Y." On the verso are the Gurney crest and name, Fifth Avenue, Cor. 16th St. N.Y. Written in pencil is Parepa-Rosa [not an authentic signature]. Parepa-Rosa (1836-1874), a British-born soprano, established with her husband their own opera company, toured the US for several years with Euphrosyne singing the lead roles, &c. She died at age 38.

Half-length sepiatone portrait of Peabody in double-breasted coat, white shirt with stiff collar and silk bow tie, his right hand tucked inside his lapel, looking at the camera. Printed below the image is "Gurney & Son, Fifth Ave, N.Y," over which is signed in blue ink, "Geo. Peabody" [not sold as an authentic signature]. On the verso are the Gurney crest and name, Fifth Avenue, Cor. 16th St. N.Y. Written in pencil is Jay Gould [not an authentic signature]. Peabody (1795-1869) is recognized as "the father of modern philanthropy." From humble beginnings in Massachusetts, he went on to become a shrewd banker and financier, and ultimately a partner in what would become J.P. Morgan & Co.
