A fine line scar on the signature page, probably occurring during binding, else an exceptionally fine copy.   Percy was a medical doctor who didn't practice and a Catholic who did, which equipped him to embark on a search for how we mortals fit into the cosmos. His theory examines when a bad thing is inevitable, for example, a meteorological occurrence such as a hurricane or a brutal winter storm. People feel better because they are focused on something and know what they must do to preserve a state of well-being for themselves and others; when there is no conflict, no focus, people have the luxury to feel badly.

Top edge red; 83,[7] pp. Brief gift inscription on front free endpaper. A fine copy, in very good, later issue dust jacket whose typography, binding, and design is by Vincent Torre. The price remained the same at $4.00, and in every other regard is identical, but the text refers to Ms. Plath in the past tense. First American edition, as stated. Sylvia Plath was born in Boston in 1932, and lived in England with her husband, the English poet Ted Hughes, and her two children until her death at thirty. This book was published in England in a somewhat different form by William H. Heinemann Ltd. in 1960. There was a second impression of the American first edition in 1967. An absolutely stunning poet of enormous talent, this is the only collection of her poetry published in her lifetime. .

Biographical note by Lois  Ames, with eight previously unpublished drawings by Plath. Sylvia Plath's only published novel was published in 1963 in the UK under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas," by William Heinemann, and eight years later under her own name in the U.S. It is the penetrating story of Esther Greenwood's breakdown as she descends into insanity.
