Near Fine in a Near Fine DJ
The ninth book in the writer's Strangers and Brothers sequence.
The cloth bound red coloured boards are clean, free of markings and showing no wear. Gilt lettering on spine. Binding tight. No markings or inscriptions except for previous sale price and description in pencil on first blank.
Edges browning slightly and slight age toning to leaves.The DJ cover has striking artwork by Sidney Nolan. DJ is complete and not price clipped. It has barely noticeable wear at extremities. Now in a protective removeable sleeve.
Overall, a lovely First Edition in a highly collectible condition.

Description:
A 1941 reprint of novel first published in 1936.
Books is solid. Boards clean. Binding tight. No inscriptions or markings except for previous sale price in pencil on first blank. A little creasing to head of spine. Leave browned due to quality of paper. Distinctive H&S yellow dust jacket is not price clipped. Some chipping at extremities with a closed tear at head of front panel (barely noticeable behind protective sleeve). A little dust dulled.
Overall, a well preserved copy. Scarce with DJ.

Description:
First Edition. Very scarce
Hodges Figgis, Dublin 1882. In publisher's original binding.
The author was a newspaper proprietor and ardent Irish Nationalist but after disposing of his newspaper titles became antagonistic to his former Nationalist associates and began to supply information to their political opponents. He attempted to destroy the career of Charles Stewart Parnell by producing forged letters purporting to demonstrate that Parnell had supported the Phoenix Park murders. The letters were proven to be forgeries and Parnell survived politically.
Green cloth bound boards are clean. Gilt lettering on spine. Head and tail of spine somewhat frayed. Joints a little rubbed. Front hinge starting but holding firm. Rear joint and endpaper loose but holding. Generally book is a little shaken. Text block good.
Internally clean with only very occasional spotting. No markings or inscriptions except for previous sale price and owner stamp on title page (see images).
