Description:
Pansy is the pen name for American author Isabella Macdonald Alden, who was born in 1841. She wrote her first book in 1865 at the age of 24, and went on to be a prolific author of novels intended to communicate wholesome Christian messages to young people.
Pansy's books were incredibly popular, and by 1900 100,000 Pansy books were being sold a year. Rev. Francis E. Clark in 1895 wrote of the popularity of the series that, "Probably no writer of stories for young people has been so popular or had so wide an audience as Mrs G.R. Alden, whose pen-name, 'Pansy,' is known wherever English books are read."
This particular Pansy book, A Sevenfold Trouble, tells the story of an unhappy family to which harmony is brought when its members look to Christ for guidance.

Description:
This is a two volume set of the first books in Coventry Patmore's The Angel in the House, The Espousals and The Betrothal. Better known than the later volumes, in these volumes Patmore espouses in verse his conception of the ideal Victorian woman, based off of his first wife. The work provides fascinating insight into ideas of gender roles and relationships between men and women in the Victorian Age.
This edition of The Espousals was published in 1856 and The Betrothal in 1857. Both volumes are in Fair condition, with significant wear to the cloth covering the boards. There is also significant bumping to the corners. There are long stretches along the edges of the covers where the fabric has worn away entirely, and there is some discolouration to the fabric on the covers. However, they still present and attractive embossed design on both the front and back covers. The Espousals appears to have possibly had a page cut from the very front, but fly leaves and the title page are still present. Both… Read More

Description:
A beautiful photographic tribute to the unsung, everyday architecture that makes Toronto what it is. Patrick Cummings spent more than thirty years taking "mugshots" of the various buildings populating Toronto's streets and neighbourhoods. Various sections collect together photographs of similar types of buildings, such as convenience stores and garages while others are devoted to particular architectural styles from the various periods of the city's history.
Of special interest are the combined photos of the same house prior to an after renovation.
With an introduction and accompanying text by freelance Toronto Star contributing columnist Shawn Micallef, this book provides a fascinating pictorial account of Toronto's architectural history.

Description:
The Black Box was a serial film, co-written by E. Phillips Oppenheim, an early 20th century author famous for his stories of adventure, intrigue, and mystery, and released in 1915. This book was a tie-in with the film, and includes a number of images from the film. The story tells of Sanford Quest, a renowned criminologist, who is trying to solve a mystery involving a series of strange messages left in a black box, which leads him to confront a master criminal.
This copy is in fair condition, and does not have a dust jacket. The cloth is quite faded on the spine, and worn in a variety of places, and there is some bumping to the corners. One of the pages with images from the film has become detached but is still present. The front hinge is cracked, and there is a lean, and some foxing to the endpapers. The internal pages show some age related discolouration, but the pages are all present and the text is legible. Description:
Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, was one of the most recognisable figures of English history. Especially after he became prime minister he was a popular subject for caricature artists of the day, given his lack of regard for the public's opinion of him as well as his unique appearance. This book collects together some of the best examples of nineteenth century caricatures of the Duke of Wellington.
These images were collected from The Department of Prints and Drawings of the Victoria and Albert Museum and compiled in this volume by John Physick who, in addition to working his entire career at the Victoria and Albert Museum, was a notable scholar, writing numerous volumes, including one on the museum itself.
Such caricatures are of unique historical significance, as they typically reflect sentiments that do not necessarily always find their way into the historical record, that of the average person.
Each image is accompanied by an explanation of the symbolism employed in the caricature… Read More

An account of the Chicago fire as told by two Washington Tribune journalists who witnessed it, James Washington Sheahan and George Putnam Upton.
As described in the preface, "This volume is devoted to a connected account of the great Chicago conflagration, with an incidental narrative of the destruction caused by the terrible forest fires in Wisconsin and Michigan, and a necessarily brief statement of the great fires of the world, which may serve for purposes of comparison. It is the account of witnesses of, and actors in the terrible scenes that closed with the destruction of a great city."
This volume is in good condition. There is some bumping to the corners, wear especially to the top and bottom of the spine, and some minor staining to the fabric on both the front and back covers.
