Early full leather with raised bands to spine and gilt border lines to front and back boards. 384pp, 16.5 x 10.5 cm. With engraved frontispiece plate showing portrait of Rabelais, plus 2 other engraved plates (folding), and some decorative engraved headings. Preliminary pages and preface include a detailed life of Rabelais, before the main text which consists of 'The First Book of Rabelais, treating of the Inestimable Life of the Great Gargantua.' Note: the reference on the title page to 15 engravings refers to the complete works; all plates in this volume are present. Good+ copy. The contents are very good, generally clean with occasional minor foxing, with one section of paper browned. Front and back hinges splitting but holding. The covers are generally worn and rubbed, with some leather losses to spine, which has no sign of a title label. Pictures available.
