Israel, Amsterdam, 1961 - 1962 reprint of the 1868-1936 edition, . 29 volumes in 15, cloth, 8vo, 22 cm,. many thousand pp. Sabin aims to includes all notable books, pamphlets and periodicals that were written by Americans or relate to America no matter where they were printed (in contrast Evans' American Bibliography includes only books printed in America). The details provided are full title, place, publisher, date, paging, format, notes, and in most instances the names of libraries possessing copies. The arrangement is alphabetical by authors, anonymous items being entered under a significant word from the title. Most entries were seen by the editor from time to time, but Sabin relied in some case on previously published descriptions, including some from booksellers' catalogues. If this sometimes produces inaccuracies, it avoids unnecessary omissions, and each of the editors was a highly accomplished bibliographer - one reviewer drew attention to the fact that "Such large sections…

Description:
Thames and Hudson, New York, first edition, 1989. Cloth, gilt cover device, 8vo, 24 cm,. 224 pp, 152 ills. Ancient Mexico was one of the great independent hearths of civilization. Out of varied landscapes grew some of the richest cultures of the early historic world - Olmec, Zapotec, Maya, Toltec and Aztec. Standard histories tend to focus on the individual progress of these societies, but this new book takes an original approach, emphasizing the unity of Mexican civilization and addressing the questions tourists and students most often ask but specialists so rarely answer. In a series of attractively written vignettes, Professor Sabloff describes, first of all, what it would have been like to have lived during the heyday of Mexico's greatest cities, from Olmec San Lorenzo 3,000 years ago to the Aztec Tenochtitlan at the Spanish Conquest. Through the eyes of astronomers and ballplayers, merchants and priests, we see the temples, palaces and tombs of a civilization obsessed with ritual and death.…

Description:
Halton & Truscott Smith Ltd., London, first edition, 1924. Limited edition of 100 numbered copies (this copy unnumbered), signed by the author. Imitation leather over bevelled boards, 320 x 250 mm,. frontispiece, 39 pp, 91 plates (several in colour, tipped-in),. The binding appears to be some sort of tan colouring applied over what may be roan-covered bevelled boards, apparently intended to produce a mock-pigskin effect. This has not met with success as the spine is heavily rubbed (and the board edges less heavily rubbed) with the loss of the tan colouring revealing the reddish roan ( a guess, but seemingly some rather poor quality leather) beneath. The binding is sound, despite the spine wear, though rather unattractive. The contents are clean and Good, with Sadleir having signed but not numbered the limitation statement, which refers to an edition of "one hundred copies".

Bibliographical Society, [London], first edition, 1937. Printed wrappers, small 4to, 22 x 18 cm,. xi, 103 , [1] pp. ills, plates, facs. Includes a bibliography of Wrangham's published work (pp 59-99). From the introductory remarks: "This paper is, I am afraid, less concerned with bibliography (as properly understood by our Society) than with the character and the outwardly tranquil but inwardly book-ridden life of a bibliomaniac. Certainly Wrangham, as an author, challenges the ingenuity of a would-be compiler of a bibliographical check-list, and such a list has been attempted as an appendix to these more general remarks. But it cannot be argued that he influenced or illustrated the development of the science to any notable degree. His claim on the recollection, respect, and - I venture to say - affection of bibliographical posterity rests on his passionate love of books for their own sake, on his quality as a scholar, on his courageous liberal-mindedness, and on the distinction and charm…
