Although undated, on the verso of the title there is subscription advertisement for an edition of Hazlitt's Handbook  offered for sale through John Russell Smith of London and Sabin in New York.  The advertisement is dated 1867. This is a general catalogue of books, including general Americana, a good assortment of American travelers to Europe, English literature, classics, and a smattering of Continental literature and history.  A first edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson was priced at $10.00, and a grangerized edition of the same work dated 1831, filled with letters and engravings, from the libraries of Jos. Only edition of Saint-Aubin's series of "cries", complete with architectural and landscape backgrounds and interiors.  Following in the tradition of 18th century French book illustration and etching, Augustin de Saint-Aubin [1736-1807] amplified the design characteristics of Gravelot, Cochin, Eisen, and especially J. M. The Salem Athenaeum, incorporated in 1810, was formed by the union of the Social and Philosophical Libraries, which had their origins in the 1760's.  A very brief history of the Athenaeum appears in the "Introductory Remarks", which is followed by the Act of Incorporation and the By-Laws and Regulations of the institution.  The catalogue lists about 9,000 volumes and was published to celebrate the move of the institution to a permanent home on Lawrence Place in Salem.  The catalogue is organized systematically by subject and a detailed "synopsis" lists the subject and sub-category classification system of the library.  Main topics are Theology, Jurisprudence, Government, and Politics, Science and Art, Belle Lettres, History, and Pamphlet Volumes. Folio.  350 x 265 mm., [13 ¾ x 10 inches.  pp. [2], pp. 337-378, [2] pp.  Illustrated with three full-page engraved plates and images of coins and calligraphy throughout the text.  Bound in full Spanish morocco, double fillet borders on boards, raised bands, red leather title label; marbled paper pastedowns and end leaves; some minor rubbing to the binding and some minor discoloration to the edges of the paper. Very nice copy with very large margins, printed on thick paper.  Translated from the Latin into Spanish by Gabriel Antonio Bordón, Infante of Spain.  Beautifully produced archeological work by the Infante of Spain, that reproduces the ancient language of the Phoenicians from reliques, coins, and papyrus fragments.  The appears to be the final chapter printed in folio of  the Ibarra edition of Sallust's La conjuracion de Catilina y La guerra de Jugurta  originally printed in quarto.  The Harvard College… Read More

Firenze: Presso Giuseppe Molini, 1793.  4to. 242 x 180 mm., (9 ½ x 7 inches).  Illustrated with one engraving one final leaf.  Contemporary decorated paper paste paper wrappers; some soiling and minor foxing to the text. Only edition of this rare bibliographical study, which poses that printing began in Lucca in the year 1468 and offers evidence that Lucca follows Subiaco and Rome as the birthplaces of printing in Italy.  His Congetture is a challenge to Ferdinardo Fossi's, bibliography, Catalogus codicum Saeculo XV (3 volumes, 1793-95), which give Florence precedence over the city of Lucca. Count Giacomo Sardini was from a noble family in Lucca, a collector of Lucchese history, whose archive was incorporated in the State Archive of Lucca at its formation in 1804. According to OCLC there are copies at Yale, Newberry, Morgan, Grolier Club and Columbia. .

[ii], vi, 202 pp. Engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page (with the date 1859 in the imprint), and 16 full-page engraved plates after original sketches by Moritz Rugendas. Original brown cloth, decorated in bind and gilt; rebacked sympathetically, some fading of the cover and some sporadic foxing to the tissue guards and to a few plates; with faults quite a good copy. The first edition of Sartorius's Mexico was published in Darmstadt in 1855 in nine parts, followed by editions published in London and New York in 1858-59. Satorius's book is one of the key travel books which illustrates the landscape and people of Mexico. Satorius was a refugee who left Germany looking for political and religious freedom. He became a wealthy miner and businessman and spent the later years of his life exploring and writing about his adopted country. All published of this short-lived bibliographical journal, thought to have been started by the Greek scholar Richard Porson, Principal Librarian at the London Institution, and taken up by his assistant James Savage after his death. Porson, renowned for his publications on classical writers was also a distinguished calligrapher and the two engravings in this volume that illustrate his work. His letter forms were adopted by Oxford University Press and became the mostly commonly used type face used in the production of their Greek texts. Manuscript lecture notes from Prof. Leonard Woods' class in theology, taught at the Seminary in Andover.  The student introduces the lectures in the first two pages: "West Chester Society Colchester Conn. -- In view of an examination preparatory to my ordination I presented to the Council the following confession of faith...." He follows this information with a nine page table of contents for the lectures, which begins with "On the inspiration of the Scriptures." In clear prose, he recounts what he was taught by Prof. Woods while he was a student at Andover for those several years. A splendid and rare type specimen sheet, beautiful printed and fortunately beautifully preserved.  The imprint states that it was 'composed, engraved, and published by J. B. Seitz'.  Seitz was an engraver for the Royal Bavarian Bureau of Statistics and Topography (Königlichen Bayrischen Statitisch-Topographischen Bureau), which was responsible for the manufacture of official maps, charts, and plans.  He was one of the first technicians to work on the trial production of lithographic maps and considered a leader in the field of cartographic design and printing. First edition (not an offprint). Important scientific argument advocating the unity of all mankind, with specific reference to African race. Serres published this affirming pamphlet during a turbulent period of history where racism and the superiority of Europeans over African, Middle Eastern, and Oriental races was rampant. Marcel de Serres was a geologist and mineralogist at the University of Montpelier. He was also a physical anthropologist and astronomer. His most famous work, De la creationn de la terre and des corps celestes, was the first work of its kind to challenge creationism based on recent observations of stellar distances from Earth and the Sun. "No. 1.-To be Continued Annually."  This appears to be the only edition printed.  "The loadstone, the magnet, magnetism, and the mariner's compass, have been known to the ancient eastern nations from time immemorial.  They called the two opposite forces in the magnet male and female and taught that everything was formed and moved by the combined action of these male and female forces.  Little, however, was known on this subject among the Europeans. . ." Wolfeboro, N. H., 1836. Tall Folio.  385 x 155 mm., [15 ¼ x 6 inches]. 68 pp. Contemp. marbled boards, leather spine; some minor deterioration to parts of the calf spine, a few signatures sprung, otherwise a good, sound ledger. Cobbler David H. Whitehouse (1807-1839) lived primarily in Wolfeboro, Carroll County, New Hampshire. This volume of records appears to have kept up to his death at age 33. His wife was Mary M. Giles Whitehouse (1806 - 1899) and they had two children; Joseph and Abigail. Whitehouse's customers came mostly from Carroll County, including the towns of Brookfield, Conway, Moultonborough, and Wakefield.  Whitehouse's signature appears on the front fly leaf and on the folio numbered 27. Entries include the date, cost, and job including various types of shoes; slippers, calfskin shoes, repairing boots, boots, and women's shoes. Johnson and with circular emblems of the 24 States of the Union arrayed as a border cut by Pease. Trimmed to the image margins, with outer border removed, slightly affecting a few state names on the left side; repaired at the center fold tiny hole above one letter of the title. Matted. Rare illustrated sales broadside for Carpet Hall, with "3000 pieces of Wilton, Brussels, Imperial, Ingrain, Damask and Venitian Carpetings [sic]" on sale. Jones' establishment was located at Carpet Hall, 18 & 20 North Second Street, one door below Christ Church. In his research on the textile trade in Philadelphia Philip Scranton writes that Jones ran a factory on South Street in the 1850's that produced carpet yarn for handloom weaving that was marketed through his showroom at Carpet Hall.
