First and Only Edition! An interesting and curious early work on silk manufacture in Torre de Moncorvo. The author, who was a director of the Royal Silk Factory and was made "juiz conservador" of the Real Companhia de Fiacao e Tecidos de Seda, founded in 1802, traces a history of silk production in many countries, encourages the cultivation of silkworms in Portugal, and gives detailed explanations for rearing silkworms and producing silk. The book was published by the newly founded Royal Academy of Sciences, then actively promoting agricultural and industrial development in Portugal. He was Italy's first and most enthusiastic supporter of vaccination, and by 1809, 1,400,000 persons had been vaccinated by Sacco or his associates. The discoverer of this vaccination was Edward Jenner (1749-1823), a well-known English surgeon. In the 18th century smallpox was a widespread disease and occasional outbreaks of special intensity resulted in a very high death rate. Jenner discovered that a person who had suffered a attack of cowpox, a relatively harmless disease that could be contracted from cattle, could not take smallpox. Bernard Sachs (1858 -1944) Jewish-American neurologist, after After graduating with a B.A. from Harvard in 1878, Sachs travelled to Europe and studied under some of the more prominent physicians of the time, such as Adolf Kussmaul, Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen, Friedrich Goltz, Rudolf Virchow, Karl Friedrich Otto Westphal, Theodor Meynert, Jean-Martin Charcot, and John Hughlings Jackson. Later, in 1885, Sachs translated Meynert's classic treatise Psychiatrie into English.
