Description:
Amsterdam, Jan Schipper, 1659. Engraved title, and 103 engraved emblems. (12) leaves, 831 pp., 2 leaves. 12mo. Contemp. vellum. Amsterdam, Jan Schipper, 1659. A nice copy of a work in which maxims of state policy are conveyed through the media of picture, motto, and commentary, in emblem-book style. Praz calls this work "a most remarkable treatise of political devices". The author (1584-1648) was a Spanish statesman and wrote the book for Infante Baltasar, son of Philip IV of Spain. The ideas in the book reveal a Christian and humanist spirit and contrast with Machiavellian maxims of statecraft. The book was very popular, and was translated into many languages. This is the 6th Latin edition. - Palau 283483; Praz, p. 484.

The edition contains "De partu Virginis", the most splendid example of humanistic religious poetry, which describes the nativity of Christ in metaphors of non-Christian classics, in imitation of the Eneid of Vergil. In addition, there are ecolgues, elegies and epigrams. - Waterstain in outer margin throughout, some worming from leaf 80 onwards in upper gutter, sometimes just touching… Read More

Zurich, David Gessner, 1702. With title-vignette. 169 pp. Small 8vo. Boards. Zurich, David Gessner, 1702. First edition of the first issue of Scheuchzer's (1672-1733) annotated Swiss bibliography which was continued up to 1715. This is a precursor of his "Bibliotheca Helvetica" (1733). This catalogue of Swiss publications of 1701 with commentary and biographical details, is arranged according to cantons where they were printed, starting off with Zurich and ending with Geneva. Basel of course was an important publishing place, and authors such as Zwinger have numerous entries. Interesting the announcement of Bernoulli's "Disqisitio Cataptro-Dioptrica", where he even includes mathematical formulas. - Steiger 14f.; Haller II, 277; Feller/Bonjour 436. Geneva, Sadag, 1932. With 405 illus. on plates, sometimes printed recto and verso (40 in color and some double-page), and 1 heraldic vignette. 4 leaves, 289 pp., 1 leaf index. Folio. Orig. vellum with the coats of arms of the 13 cantons on both covers, spine gilt. Geneva, Sadag, 1932. Numbered copy of the de luxe edition bound in full vellum, of a total edition of 1000 copies. One of the most beautifully produced chronicles in facsimile. It was written by Diebold Schilling the Younger (1460-1522?) around 1513, and it offers a detailed account of daily life in the 15th century, treating such diverse topics as trade, fortification, topography, dress rules, etc. The technique of the illustrations is unique for the time: painted in opaque colors, with bold outlines in black ink, it is meant to convey the impression of paintings rather than colored pen drawings. The Lucerne Chronicle is considered the most beautiful of all illuminated chronicles ever made in the Swiss Confederation. - Wyss 141-143;… Read More

Contemp. boards with spine label (slightly bumped). Bern, Franz Samuel Fätscheryn, 1743. First edition of this important source for the history of the Burgundian wars by Diebold Schilling, town scribe and historian, who died shortly after the completion of his monumental chronicle of the city of Bern. The present "Beschreibung" is part three of the manuscript which Schilling's widow sold to Zurich, and is published here for the first time unillustrated on the initiative of Johann Jakob Bodmer. Schilling relates, as an eye-witness, the events of the years 1468-1484, the wars between Charles the Bold and the Confederates which culmiated in the battles of Morat and Nancy. Of particular interest are the texts of historical songs popular at the time which he preserved to posterity. - Ms. library number on front… Read More
