A nice copy of a work in which maxims of state policy are conveyed through the media of picture, motto, and commentary, in emblem-book style. Praz calls this work "a most remarkable treatise of political devices". The author (1584-1648) was a Spanish statesman and wrote the book for Infante Baltasar, son of Philip IV of Spain. The ideas in the book reveal a Christian and humanist spirit and contrast with Machiavellian maxims of statecraft. The book was very popular, and was translated into many languages. Sabellicus (1436-1506), scholar and historian from Venice, was a pupil of Julius Pompominus Laetus. Later he became Professor of Eloquence at Udine and Venice, and was appointed keeper of the Biblioteca Marciana after the publication of his history of Venice "Decades rerum Venetarum" (1487). The attribution of the "Declamatio contra Catilinam" to Marcus Porcius Latro (fl. late 1st cent. The reproductions are by the Graphic Engraving Company. The introduction by Mrs. R.L. Stevenson is printed in red. The prayers are in black with red initials, each starting with a large illuminated initial. This catalogue of Swiss publications of 1701 with commentary and biographical details, is arranged according to cantons where they were printed, starting off with Zurich and ending with Geneva. Basel of course was an important publishing place, and authors such as Zwinger have numerous entries. It was written by Diebold Schilling the Younger (1460-1522?) around 1513, and it offers a detailed account of daily life in the 15th century, treating such diverse topics as trade, fortification, topography, dress rules, etc. The technique of the illustrations is unique for the time: painted in opaque colors, with bold outlines in black ink, it is meant to convey the impression of paintings rather than colored pen drawings.
