ZEPHANIAH SWIFT SPALDING (1837-1927). Spalding, a Union Army Colonel, was a statesman and sugar magnate in Hawaii. ALS. 8pgs. April 22, 1916. Kealia, Kauai, [Hawaii]. An autograph letter signed “Z. S. Spalding”. The sugar magnate wrote to “Mr. Franklin”, a New Yorker, from Kealia, his plantation on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. His lengthy letter concerns World War One, a topic on which Spalding obviously had strong opinions, as well as business, the shipping industry, personal news, and life in Hawaii. It also mentions Spalding’s service in the Civil War: “…You say the War has caused many radical changes in New York’s business conditions and methods which, in your opinion, have come to stay. I quite agree with you, because, for the first time in its history, the United States are really brought into association and in many ways into competition with Europe. We have for many years supplied Europe with cotton, flour and pork; but, when I was a boy my jack knife came from England, as… Read More

A typed letter signed “Edward Sackville West”. On letterhead of his home in Dorest, Sackville-West responded to someone requesting quotes to include in a dictionary. “Dear Sir, I think you for your letter, but, while feeling much flattered that you should wish to include quotations from my work in your proposed dictionary, I feel uncertain what kind f thing you want. Observations on life? I suppose my books contain such, but I cannot recall any offhand and should have to re-read all my novels to find them – an unthinkable task! On the other hand, if it is examples of prose – critical and/or descriptive – you are looking for, I daresay I might point out a few that I still like. If you would just give me a definite line, I will do my best to help. Yours very truly, Edward Sackville West”. The letter is in fine… Read More

(WORLD WAR II IN SCOTLAND). ALS. 6pgs. October 5, 1940. Drummakill, Alexandria, Dunbartonshire. An autograph letter signed “Hector” and written during World War Two. The author discusses hosting evacuated children and the fact that Scotland has so far been lucky in avoiding air raids. “…Our first lot of 3 boys are no longer with us. One of them the nicest lad died last Xmas from appendicitis – the other two took themselves off to a farm, as they objected to being kept in order! But lately I hear they returned home to Clydebank. Whether we get others depends on the severity of air raids! So far Scotland has really been lucky in this respect. Of course there are some here & there. We hear the hum sometimes usually at night, and have heard bombs exploding, but quite a bit away! But you never can tell when it might not be a bigger affair!!
