Franciscus Xaverius' [The Life and Apostologic Dedication, the Miracles and the Glory of Francis Xavier] by Philippe François Taisne in Antwerp. Rare map of India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines, illustrating the travels of the earliest Jesuit Missionaries. Taisne (1627-1691) was a Jesuit teacher, and a military chaplain. Bouttats, who also engravedthe other two maps in the book, of Southeast Asia, and Europe to Japan, had two brothers, Gaspar and Gerard, and twelve children, nieces and nephews, who were also engravers. Extracted from the Annual Report to the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, published in 1901 during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902). Colour-coding differentiates Christian Filipinos from "New Christians" and "Non-Believers", identifies Muslim regions and cites 63 different local tribes. This antique engraving on laid paper was done by master engraver Charles Henry Jeens (English, 1827-1879), after a painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner (English, 1775–1851). The original painting was done by Turner in the style of Antoine Watteau and Thomas Stothard's Decameron illustrations and he exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1828. Condition: with foxing on margins, not affecting plate.
