Description:
[48], 190, [2]; [24], 202, [14] pp.Rare third edition, with a newly engraved title-page, of Tachenius’s widely used work on chemistry and medicine. Together the Hippocrates chimicus and the Antiquissime Hippocraticae medicinae clavis form the complete works on chemistry and medicine of Otto Tachenius (1610-1680), based on the classic Hippocrates. He was schooled by Franciscus Sylvius, but surpassed his vision of acids, claiming that this is the basis of all physiology. According to Tachenius acid and alkali are the two elements of all things, corresponding to the fire and water that according to Hippocrates are in all things. He was in a debate of chemistry and medicine with Helwich Dietrich and Johann Zwelfer, the latter published his response to Tachenius’ work under the title Discursus apologeticus adversus Hippocratem chymicum in 1672.Tachenius was a German pharmacist who worked as an apothecary’s assistant in different German towns, before moving to Padua in 1652 where he earned his medical… Read More

Description:
[40], 270, [1]; 286, [2] pp.Ad 1: second edition of Tachenius's popular work on Hippocratic chemistry. Hippocrates, in the Islamic tradition known as Boqrat, where he is often referred to as "the first codifier of medicine", is often named together with Galen, and their works mainly survived because of the Arabic translations.Ad 2: first edition of Tachenius's work on acid and alkalies which can be seen as an addition to the work above. Heavily influenced by Hippocrates (Boqrat), he claims that acid and alkalies are the two elements of all things, corresponding to the fire and water that according to Hippocrates are in all things. Binding damaged with some wormholes. Foxing throughout and wormholes in the endpapers. Overall a good copy.l Ad 1: Krivatsky 11653; cf. A.G. It is richly illustrated with mathemical drawings concerning the applications of perspective and with projections of cylinders, rings and circles. The present collected works, published posthumously by Tacquet's pupil Simone Laurentio Veterani, includes several works published here for the first time, namely his works on astronomy and on optics. The additional work on military engineering also is of interest, nicely illustrated with plans of fortifications and strongholds. Tacquet's works are exemplary text books, clearly demonstrating the theory, and also offering useful exercises for the pupils.Fine copy of a rare work in an interesting contemporary binding.l De Backer & Sommervogel II, col. 616; DSB XIII, p. 236; Houzeau & Lancaster 3406; Poggendorff II, p. 1064 ; not in STCV.

Description:
[8], 57, [2] pp.First and only edition of the collected compositions by the Western-schooled Indian professor of musicology Raja Sourindro Mohun Tagore (1840-1914). He was the leading specialist of his time in Indian music, and studied his native Indian musical tradition with the latest theoretical knowledge. This made him a pioneer in the introduction of traditional Indian music into modern times and in making it accessible to Western audiences. He founded the Bengal Music School and Bengal Academy of Music that operated under the Western standard. In the present work Tagore used his knowledge of Western music to present 50 Indian tunes in the European system of notation, accompanied by the English translation of the lyrics, resulting in 59 pages of printed music. These 50 "tunes" were all composed by the author himself on different occasions. Tagore published the work himself and dedicated it to Sir Ashley Eden, Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. Description:
VIII, 224, 7 pp.First and only Amsterdam edition, with additions, of an pharmacological and medical work by the famous Coimbra professor of medicine and pharmacology Franciscus Tavares (1750-1812), now edited by the Amsterdam Jewish physician Jacob d’Ancona (1739-1798) who added a list, partly in Dutch, of explanations of the Latin plant names. The first edition appeared in Coimbra in 1787, with three further editions in 1788, 1790 and 1791, the present edition based on that of 1788. Together with another book by Tavares, De pharmacologia libellus, published in Coimbra in 1786 (2nd ed. 1787), the Medicamentorum sylloge, formed the basis for the first official Portuguese pharmacopoeia: the Pharmacopeia geral, published in 1794, which is in fact also written by Tavares, propagating new insights, namely that the recent scientific results of natural history and chemistry are essential and fundamental for the further development of the science of pharmacology.Head and foot of spine slightly worn. Description:
[8], 156 pp.First edition of one of the puritan and edifying works by the reformed minister of Middelburg Willem Teellinck (1579-1629). The title would translate in English as: Zephania's warning, to prevent the destruction of Jerusalem; also fit for the present condition of our dear country. With his many works Teellinck intended to introduce into the Republic the spirit of English pietist Puritanism. On the one hand he tried to stimulate personal piety, on the other hand he levelled criticism at various ethical and religious abuses and errors, and aimed for a complete reform in all areas of life as certainly also in the present work. With his books he has exerted a truly enormous influence on theologians and parishioners of the 17th century alike. Teellinck is therefore generally seen as the father of the influential reformed pietist movement within the Dutch Reformed Church, known as the "Further Reformation".With manuscript annotations and proverbs on the fly-leaves, dated 1770. Description:
A very rare print presenting an episode in the life of Charles the Bold (le Téméraire; Carel de Stoute; 1433-1477), the fourth Duke of Burgundy from the House of Valois, who also ruled large parts of the Northern Netherlands and Zeeland. The smaller scenes, three on each side, illustrate the various events in the story. The caption under each small scene first gives a couplet in one line (in roman style lettering) that offers wise moral advice related to the scene. It is followed by four lines of verse (in italic) applying it more specifically to the event in the story. Six columns of italic text in the foot of the plate tell the whole story in prose. The stories used for the two similar prints appeared in Cornelius Aurelius, Die chronyk van Hollandt (Leiden, 1517), known as the “Divisiekroniek”, so this one may also come from that source, but we have not found it.The plate appears to be somewhat worn, so probably a late impression of an older plate. In some cases the text simply gives the name of the medicine with a reference to a published source, in others it gives a full recipe with the ingredients and instructions for their preparation.Johannes de Cros published the translation without consent of the Collegium Medicorum of The Hague. This lead to a heated argument and De Cros would later add a postscript (8 pp.), as included in the present copy, explaining his side of the story. The most delectable history of Reynard the Fox. Newly corrected and purged...London, Thomas Ilive...

Description:
[160]; [112]; [4], 160 pp.One of the rare sets of all 3 parts of the English Reynard the Fox, the third part here in its first edition. The Reynard stories were already established as a coherent collection in the 12th century and were first printed in 1479, in a Dutch prose edition. They became especially well known when translated into English (and adapted) for Caxton's 1481 edition (in 43 chapters). The publisher Edward Alde in London began work on an extensive revision of Caxton's text, with many new additions, but he published only the first part, probably in 1620 (the first edition of the present part 1), containing 25 chapters, some corresponding with chapters in Caxton's edition and some not. Although the second part would have to wait 52 years, the first part quickly became the standard English version of the Reynard the Fox stories, with 8 editions from 1620 to 1671. Its language was modernized, giving both a view of the stories as they were known through most of two centuries and insights… Read More

Lawrence, who he - together with cameraman Harry Chase -, accompanied through Palestine and Arabia during the First World War.
