Silver prints (24); Each 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; one mounted; With the photographer's credit in the negative, most with manuscript captions verso.
William Thomas Mullarky was a Euro-American photographer from Gallup, New Mexico, who spent several decades documenting the puebloan peoples in the areas surrounding Gallup. He began his career working for the photographer Leo Hetzel, assisting in portrait work and working in the darkroom. In 1927 he established his own studio in Gallup. He was active in the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, and photographed the event prolifically in the period before its more widespread photographing by tourists. the photographs here depict Zuni, Hopi, Cachiti, Apache, Kiowa and Acoma subjects, and are all annotated on the versos. Mullarky sold his negatives along with his shop in 1960, and we find no examples of institutional holdings of his work or large groups of prints surviving, despite his prints turning up from time to time on the secondary market.

Sixth-plate daguerreotype; Accompanied by the original identification slip and research notes.
Sixth plate daguerreotype, with some slight fading and scratches, professionally cleaned and recased in a modern case in 1992, with receipts for the restoration provided. Accompanied by a period inked note reading: Dwiouski / (Showsky for Hannah) / Ischunuongwandt / (Tunangwant).
A very early image of an indigenous subject in a Hudson's Bay Company blanket. A note accompanying the photograph identifies the sitter as "Dwiousky / Showsky for Hannah / Ischunuongwandt / Tunungwant." This would identify the sitter as Seneca, from the area close to the Tunungwant Creek - also known as the Tuna Creek - near the Pennsylvania / New York border in the Bradford area. The image has additional significance for its portrayal of a Hudson Bay Company blanket, many of which were traded to indigenous traders in in Canada as part of the company's fur trade efforts.
