Black cloth as issued, an ex library copy with book-plate, neat stamp on title and verso of all plates, a clean copy in very good condition. *The second USS Albatross, often seen as USFC Albatross in scientific literature citations, was an iron-hulled, twin-screw steamer in the United States Navy and reputedly the first research vessel ever built especially for marine research. Albatross was laid down at Wilmington, Delaware, by Pusey and Jones in March 1882; launched on 19 August 1882, and commissioned on 11 November 1882, with Lt. Zera L. Tanner in command. Tanner, who had superintended the ship's design and construction, would command Albatross, a Navy-manned vessel assigned to the United States Fish Commission, a civilian government agency, for nearly 12 years. Publisher's cloth now faded and a bit rippled on both boards, internally clean and in good order. *A classic lampoon on English class education at the end of the nineteenth century - 'Well, sir, I want to know this, will this Greek of yours enable a man to make a fortune?' 'No, sir, no more than your pounds, shillings, and pence will make a gentleman'.

Page 211 is a folding Genealogical Table and is not counted in the Register, though numbered in the pagination. Contemporary calf now snagged and worn, joints weak, a few early and a couple of later leaves with margins browned, a few worm holes in the extreme upper corner of the text block not affecting the text. *SCARCE - ESTC R30161 - Gavelkind was a system of land tenure associated chiefly with the county of Kent, but also found in Ireland and Wales and some other parts of England. Its inheritance pattern is a system of partible inheritance, which bears resemblance to Salic patrimony: as such, it might testify in favour of a wider, probably ancient Germanic tradition. A very nice copy of a scarce title. *The five plates show the houses in which Maria Teesdale had lived, each one fronting a section of poetry written when living at those houses. The final group of four poems were written at DOWNE HALL [not House, the Darwin's home], KENT, 1876-1882, and has a fine lithograph of the house, printed in a light chocolate tint [as are all the others]. One of these four poems is a eulogy to her typewriter - 'On being asked the Price of my Type-Writer'.
