London: Vizetelly, 1888. Uchard (1824-1893) was a French dramatist and "man of letters." His erotic and romantic novel has also been published as "French and Oriental Love in a Harem." This is the First Edition in English (translator unknown). Blue decorative cloth binding, with cherubs and nymphs on the front cover; the spine features a Turkish quarter moon; decorations filled in black and gilt. Clean text; 339 pages, with two pages of publisher's adverts in the front; rough-cut edges. Many illustrations by Paul Avril. Exterior shows some wear, with rubbing and a bit of fray; corners have been bumped; spine has a bit of fade, but all lettering is still bright. Hinges are split, but still holding. There is typical English spotting, confined to the front and rear endpapers and the page ends. The dustwrapper is unclipped. Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1856. Initially issued anonymously as a political biography for Fremont's run at the presidency. This copy lists Upham as the author, but Fremont was a collaborator. Upham (1802-1875) was a rather well-known politician of the time. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition.Brown cloth binding (it was originally purple, a colour popular at the time which did not take the sun particularly well), blindstamped, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 356 pages, very bright and fresh for its age. This copy lacks the publisher's adverts in the rear. Mild rubbing and bumping. The gilt lettering on the spine is still bright. Anglo-Irish Gaelic scholar and critic Percival Arland Ussher (1899-1980) was renowned for his wit combined with critical insight ("Thirty years ago, to praise James Joyce was an act of daring; today it needs an almost equal daring to criticise him."). Ussher believed that none of these great writers could be understood without reference to their Irish background. Later he was a champion of J.P.
