New York: American Studio, 1916. Silver print photograph, 10.5" x 14". A scarce photograph by noted New York City commercial photographer Irving Underhill (1872-1960) showing curb brokers trading stocks in the outdoor market on Broad St. in Manhattan's financial district. During the late-1800s and early-1900s, curbstone brokers conducted trading on the actual street-curbs of financial districts-the most famous curb market being the one pictured here on Broad St. These brokers ran informal, semi-illegitimate stock market enterprises from 1900 to 1921-shouting and gesturing from office windows to the street below, as can be seen in this image. The brokers tended to trade stocks that were especially speculative in nature, as well as stocks in small companies producing iron, textiles, chemicals, etc. In 1921 the outdoor market moved into a new home-the American Stock Exchange at 86 Trinity Place, Manhattan. Lindbergh posing in front of the Spirit of St. Louis, with a huddle of men on the far right. With an early ink inscription on the backing board reading "Charles A. Lindburg, the first man to make a non stop flight from New York to Paris. May 21- 1927."CONDITION: Good, light toning at edges.

Upton's Florida Views, [ca. 1897]. Stereoview albumen print 3.5" x 6.5" on 4.25" x 7" paperboard mount; numbered 60 in the negative. One in a series of St. Augustine stereoviews in Upton's Florida Views series. On the verso is a detailed listing of his five series of Florida photographs, "from the Stereoscopic to the largest Photographs made." The Smithsonian Institution offers the following note on Upton: "Benjamin Franklin Upton (1818-after 1901) was a daguerreotypist, photographer, and inventor. He began his career making daguerreotypes in Brunswick, Maine, (circa 1844-1847) then opened a gallery in Bath, Maine, where he obtained several patents for inventions and products associated with daguerreotyping. Upton and his family moved to St. Anthony, Minnesota, in 1856, where he photographed at American Indian agencies nearby, including the Chippewa and Winnebago agencies and Dakota prisoners at Fort Snelling after the 1862 uprising.
