Wagenaar wrote the first complete overview of the entire history of the Low Countries, from "the earliest times" up to 1751, two years after the first printing of the first volume appeared. His aim was to provide the general Dutch public with an impartial and objective general history of their "fatherland" to promote active and morally correct citizenship. It remained a leading work on Dutch national history to the end of the 19th century.The present set was bound by the so-called parrot bindery in Utrecht, perhaps initially ca. 1758, since volumes 1-18 (1752-1758) are uniform but volumes 19-21 (1758-1759) form a minor variant. Attractive design in black ink with grey washes by Jan Gerard Waldorp, for the frontispiece of Betje Wolff's pedagogical essay Proeve over de opvoeding (1779). The drawing shows a lady entering a room where a mother is sitting with a baby, a cradle beside her, and several other children in the room reading and playing, with a bookcase in the background, with a globe on top. Noach van der Meer the younger engraved the frontispiece after this drawing, and Allart in Amsterdam published the book jointly with Isaac van Cleef in The Hague in 1779. The essay is the only pedagogical work of the important eighteenth-century Dutch women writer’s duo Wolff and Deken. Wolff (1738-1804) discusses the importance of the mother’s role in raising children: a mother should read a lot to educate her children in a broad range of subjects and she should not tell, or let her children read, foolish folk tales, but instead present them with stories from the Bible, classical antiquity and Dutch history.Waldorp (1740-1806)… Read More

The shells are depicted on three engraved plates ater drawings by George Walker, who studied the shells under the microscope. The text-pages contain a brief description of each shell, with text in both Latin and English. The work starts with a dedication to the Duchess of Portland and Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), the famous naturalist who took part in Captain Cook's first great voyage, followed by an introduction. VII, [1], 126, [2 blank] pp.First edition, published posthumously in the original Swedish, of an account of Wallin’s principal journey through Arabia, unknown to most bibliographers: "It was not until two years after his death", writes Henze, "that the report of his first (and most important) journey (performed in 1845, a year before the appearance of the first volume of Carl Ritter’s ‘Arabia’) was published". This refers to the English "Narrative of a Journey from Cairo to Medina and Mecca", which was printed in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1854. In fact, an extensive account of the first leg of this highly significant journey was first given to the world in December 1853, only a little more than a year after the author’s death. Te Water's collection was auctioned by his heirs and could be viewed at the deceased's house from 9 to 11 October 1823. The first catalogue covers Te Water's book collection, in four sections according to by format (folio, quarto, octavo and duodecimo), with a fifth section for Te Water's own publications. The second catalogue includes autographs, manuscripts, coins and medals, portraits, maps, bookcases, paintings and other items. With a list of thirty items omitted from the sale. The sale took place piecemeal from 13 to 30 October. The title-page notes that tickets for viewing had to be bought one day in advance. This siege was one of the last big events in the Yemeni-Ottoman conflicts, which started with the first Ottoman attempt to conquer Yemen in 1538. In 1911 a treaty was signed, with which Yemen became a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire until Yemen could take advantage of the collapse of the Empire during and after WWI to reclaim its independence. After his travels in Arabia, described in A modern pilgrim in Mecca, he returned to Africa. During the First World War he remained in Africa, where he founded a coastal defence force called the "Arab Rifles", active around Mombasa. The Irishman Isaac Weld (1774-1856) spent over two years in North America researching the suitability of the countryside for large-scale immigration of Irish citizens. Departing from Philadelphia in 1795 and guided by Indians he made his way through dense woodlands and along rivers. On the way he visited several cities where he saw much of the best society, and made the acquaintance of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In 1799 he published his travel book, which went through several English editions and was translated into French (An 8 [1799/1800]), German and Dutch. James Wetherell (1822?-1858) was a British businessman who lived in Bahia for 15 years beginning in 1843, serving as British vice consul (1843-1857). In short notes, he wrote about many aspects of Brazilian life, people and customs as religion (churches, convents, religious functions, ceremonies), means of transport (boats, canoes, carts), politics and economy, slavery, food and cooking, etiquette, fishing. He also describes largely natural historical aspects such as flora, horticulture, fruits, fossils and shells, insects and different mammals and birds. The author, Jacob Campo Weyerman (1677-1747), was one of the foremost Dutch authors of the Enlightenment and was known for his merry style. For this history of Dutch art, he leans on Houbraken's De groote schouburgh der Neder-lantsche konstschilders en schilderessen (1718-1721).The first three parts were all published in 1729; the fourth - 40 years later - is mainly devoted to the painters from the Art Academy at The Hague. All 40 plates with artists' portraits, the frontispiece, 2 other portraits and the night scene are in the first 3 volumes (the later volume 4 has no plates). pp. 321-324.Extract from the Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society, relating the manner in which a sunken frigate was salvaged from the Nore near Sheerness. The 32-gun Dutch frigate Embuscade originally formed part of the Batavian squadron that surrendered to the British Navy during the Vlieter Incident of 1799. Embuscade was integrated into an Orangist Dutch squadron in British service and in 1801 converted into a floating battery. "In the morning of the 9th day of July, 1801, the Dutch frigate … left the moorings in Sheerness harbour … In about thirty minutes, she went down by the head, … not giving the crew time to take in the sails, nor the pilot or officers more than four minutes notice, before she sunk; by which unfortunate event, twenty-two of the crew were drowned". Added is instalment 6 of Wibmer’s similarly absurdist Utopiaansche courant, a periodical that preceded the Weekblad and satirized King Willem I, who had ruled the Low Countries since Napoleon’s defeat in 1815. Both periodicals contain severe but cleverly hidden criticism of Dutch politics, society and circumstances of the day. Wibmer (1792-1836), trained as a minister of the Walloon Church, acknowledged his authorship, leading the church to relieve him of his post. Not only is it forbidden to sell and/or serve drink, meaning alcohol, it is also strictly forbidden to do any sort of work and even travel (by land or water) is strongly discouraged unless to go to and from church. Between 1713 and 1795 a general day of prayer, contemplation and giving thanks took place every year in March in the Dutch Republic (mainland) and on a later date in the colonies because news and announcements travelled slowly. After the “rampjaar” (year of disaster) 1672, when enemy forces invaded the Dutch Republic, civic opposition known as the “Zwolle faction” arose against the Deventer city council on the grounds that Deventer had been the first city in Overijssel to surrender to the French troops. In the fictional dialogue, Arent portrays the French as devils who cannot be trusted, implying that the Deventer officials were foolish to give up the fight and accept their terms, while Capelle thinks people judge the Deventer officials too harshly. They discuss the matter amicably and Arent seems to convince Capelle to move closer to his view, though the dialogue presents arguments on both sides. From a young age, Benjamin Wilkes (ca. 1720?-1749) was a member of the Aurelian Society, which eventually evolved into the Royal Entomological Society. Wilkes himself published and sold the first edition of the book The English moths and butterflies, and commissioned the colourist, and the present edition was beautifully coloured for the publisher. The book's title places significant emphasis on the plates' colouration, and the artist's execution of the coloration suggests an accomplished colourist, likely affiliated with the publisher. Together with the very rare continuation (published 15 years later), displaying the triumphal arches erected upon William IV's return to The Hague on 6 June 1747.Around 1740 the Dutch Republic got involved in the War of the Austrian Succession, which lead to the occupation of States' Flanders (the northern part of Flanders, part of the Dutch Republic since the Eighty Years' War) by the French in 1747. This caused an enormous unrest in the Republic as this fully exposed the weakness of the Dutch defences, leading to a strong wish for restoration of the stadtholderate. In 1823 the Lynx was send to the Dutch East Indies, but instead of navigating via Cape of Good Hope, they sailed via South America to establish new trade contacts. They first visited Buenos Aires, and continued their journey to Cape Horn, South America's west coast and the Philippines to the Dutch East Indies. The travelogue describes events at sea (ocean currents, storms, diseases), different cities and populations, and some political events, including a rebellion at Palembang in 1824. The frontispiece shows a native of the "populous group", an island northeast of Lord Howe's Island.Lacking the atlas volume. Binding worn, spine discoloured.
