While Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740, Anson led a squadron of 8 ships on a mission to disrupt or capture Spain's Pacific possessions. Returning to Britain in 1744 via China and thus completing a circumnavigation, the voyage was notable for the capture of the Manila galleon "Cavadonga" off Samar but also horrific losses mostly due to scurvy with only 188 men of the original 1,854 surviving. Map from the Dutch edition of the French translation; Important chart of the Northern Philippines with islands, bays, reefs, and the track of Anson's Routeof the "Centurion". With a compass rose and rhumb lines, French and Dutch Title.
While Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740, Anson led a squadron of 8 ships on a mission to disrupt or capture Spain's Pacific possessions. Returning to Britain in 1744 via China and thus completing a circumnavigation, the voyage was notable for the capture of the Manila galleon "Cavadonga" but also horrific losses mostly due to scurvy with only 188 men of the original 1,854 surviving. original-colour lithograph, with geographical miles and British statutemiles. Map from 'Cassell's Weekly Dispatch Atlas'. Edward Weller (18??-1884) was a cartographer and engraver based in London. His best known work appears in Cassell's Weekly Dispatch Atlas, published in monthly segments for subscribers of the "Weekly Dispatch" newspaper. This collection of maps eventually grew to include much of the known world. Published in various editions from 1855 through the early 1880s, The "Weekly Dispatch" had its offices at 138 Fleet Street, London, England. Condition: with some foxing, shaved right margin.
