The Orient Line was formed in the late 18th century, and by the middle of the 19th century was sailing its steamships all over the world. Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) London: Tho. Basset, James Adamson, and Tho. Newborough. , 1687. First Edition. Pamphlet. A contemporary account / bibliography of the tracts and pamphlets published by both sides. Most of these were anonymous, and there are marginalia which name the author in most cases in a contemporary hand. Title, text, errata. The errata has been crossed out, and the corrections listed have been made by hand in the text. Clagett was particularly close friends with his eventual successor at Gray's Inn, William Wake, the future archbishop of Canterbury. Clagett saw through the press Wake's "The present state" while Wake was lying low in Dorchester, leading to its sometimes being erroneously credited to Clagett (including by Wing, who referenced it as C4390). The title leaf is detached and a little grubby. London: John W. Parker, 1849. A very nice rebound copy of this work. First edition. Bound in half brown leather with marbled boards. Clean and tidy with very slight rubbing only. The text block is clean, if fractionally darkened. Errata slip present. A classic work in the theory of colonization. Wakefield proposes among other things the creation of a colony in New Zealand to be administered by the Church of England, thus disarming missionary opposition. In fact, the first emigrant ships left for the Canterbury settlement in 1850, and Wakefield himself left for New Zealand in 1853, eventually settling in Wellington. 230 by 150mm (9 by 6 inches). xxiv, 1-514, 6 (ads). pp.

Good clean condition, with a touch of handling only. No titles to spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout with just a touch of darkening to the pages. xii, 264 pages. 190 by 130mm (7½ by 5 inches).

Advertising poster for the Josef Finck & Co sparkling wine cellars, (Hoflieferanten) Mainz. Anonymous color lithograph on cardboard by published by Georg August Walter, Mainz around 1910.With the title in stone and typographic address On light cardboard. There is a 7cm closed tear (with old repair) to the right edge, and a small chip to the top left corner. Otherwise in very good condition. 420 by 595mm (16½ by 23½ inches).

Volume I has frontispiece (portrait) with tissue guard. Portrait has a few spots of foxing. Tissue guard has offsetting. Many gathers uncut. Volume I: lxxviii, 397 pp. Volume II: 410 pp. 230 x 155 mm (9 x 6 inches). Sir John Vanbrugh was an English architect, perhaps best known as the designer of both Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard. However, it is with his work as a dramatist that he offended many sections of 18th century society, not only with the sexual explicitness of his plays, but also with their messages in defence of a woman's rights within marriage.

No date, but preface dated July 1940 and neat owner's name, and rank, to front dated June 1941. A guide to facial reconstruction, and treating war casualties, with surgery and dentistry. Includes graphic photos and illustrations of war related injuries. Boards in very good condition. Endpapers are age toned, but the rest of the book is clean and bright; including the glossy photo paper used for illustrations. xi, 199 pages - including index. 250 x 160 mm (9¾ x 6¼ inches). William Warwick James OBE was one of the foremost dental surgeons of his time; and a pioneer in maxillofacial surgery. Benjamin William Fickling CBE was a dentist and doctor who played a major part in the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a specialised discipline. A seminal work by these two specialists.

Text in black gothic script (German). Embellished with six beautiful chapter heading engravings. Internally in excellent condition. A little foxing to the end papers but the rest is very clean. These woodcuts are biographical pieces, mainly aimed against the Roman Catholic church. Described as: sharp satire against monasticism and priesthood: Hayn-Got. VIII, 328. Veit Weber was the pseudonym of Georg Philip Ludwig Leonhard Waechter (1762-1837). A writer of fiction, and briefly a revolutionary. Although an educational book, this is a significant part of the gathering of folk songs and rhymes, which was popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The gilt is a little rubbed and there is some bumping to the edges. Binding is a little bumped and one of the illustrations (p118) is partially loose (to the lower half) but still holding in place. Small repair to the edge of the frontis illustration with archival tape. Some pencil under-linings to difficult words throughout suggest this was used as an educational aid. There is a fairly large hole in page 65/66 (see photographs). Still in reasonably sound condition overall though. Essentially a re-telling of Aesop's fables with the moral to the end of each tale. Trescot resists the challenge, debating issues of cowardice, violence and honor at some length.
