This scholarly study present the history of the concept of acedia or "spiritual sloth" from its origins among the Egyptian desert monks through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It is based on a careful analusis of the term acedia and its later vernacular equivalents as found in medieval text. The investigation proceeds in chronological order and pays close attention to the different emphases and changes the concept underwent, not only in different periods and cultural milieus but also in various types of literature, such as monastic writings, scholartis summae, and the popular literature written for confessors and preachers.
