London: Macmillan and Co., 1906. xvii, [3], 515pp, [1]. With an engraved frontispiece and numerous engraved illustrations in the text. Original publisher's green cloth, ruled and lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed, cocked. Internally clean and crisp. The Malay Archipelago recounts the expedition of British naturalist, colleague of Charles Darwin, and fellow proponent of evolution, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) in the southern territories of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Chronicling Wallace's eight-year scientific exploration of the East Indies, from 1854 to 1862, the work provides detailed accounts of the geography, floral and fauna of the region - indeed the preface relates that 14,000 miles were traversed and 125,660 specimens of natural history collected. It is from these travels that the explorer identified what would be known as the Wallace Line, a division separating the fauna of the archipelago into two distinct parts; the western half where the animals were of Asian origin,… Read More

Ink inscription to title-page, occasional spotting, dust-soiling, chipping to margins. Begun on 20th June 1793 and made available to the public just eight days later, the work recounts Dumourier's actions during the French Revolution and resulting war - celebrating his decisive victory against the Austrians at Jemappes, and his unwavering support of the cause of an independent Belgium Republic. Wallace is quick to excuse the general's subsequent defection from and attempted overthrow of the revolutionary government that caused him to flee his native country and wander Europe pursued by royalist intrigue. Description:
London: Sold by J. Roberts, 1739. 3-29pp, [1]. Without half-title. Disbound. Title-page separated from text-block. A tract by politician Horatio Walpole (1678-1757) regarding the Convention of El Pardo, a treaty between Great Britain and Spain designed to resolve issues regarding the freedom of the seas and ensuing smuggling operations. Delegates agreed that Britain would receive damages for harm done to vessels and crews during Spanish boardings, and that Spain be compensated in return for the nonpayment of proceeds from the Asiento - the permission given by the government to trade slaves in Spanish colonies. The convention proved exceedingly unpopular with the South Sea Company and British and Spanish merchant captains alike, and by the year's end both nations would violate the treaty, thus instigating the War of Jenkins' Ear.
