Contemporary calf, spine goldtooled (corners sl. rubbed and top and bottom of spine sl. damaged). Edges sprinkled red. Millard, French says on this: "This small, abridged version of Vitruvius' De Architectura appeared the year following the publication of Claude Perrault's folio translation and encyclopedic commentary on the entire Vitruvian treatise (Les dix livres d'architecture...). Bound together in half green morocco with marbled boards. Spine richly gilt. Ex libris on inside front cover. Étienne Gabriel Peignot, the great bibliographer was born at Arc-en-Barrois, 15th May 1767. Originally a bookseller he later became librarian. Every leisure moment he gave to book and pen. He lived to be eighty three years old and left behind him no less than fifty or more unpublished works in manuscript.

Printed both sides."This celebrated picture of Bonaparte, on which so much praise has been lavished in Paris, is now arrived in London... it being considered as the chef-d'oeuvre of the present great school of portrait painting in Paris." Lefevre painted a number of portraits of Napoleon, the most likely candidate is the one now in the Wellington Collection at Apsley House, dated to 1812. The reverse of the handbill has an advert for a letting agency and an advert for an early form of employment agency for servants.

The largest part of this "newspaper" is devoted to a list of new books that have been published, where they can be obtained and with a very extensive description about the books. VIII books are described plus a further two that are being described under "avis divers" and "spectacles".

1805. London, J. Harding, n.d. (c. 1805). Small 8vo. 4pp. Self paper wrappers. A catalogue of only agricultural books containing on the first page a books that is published 'this day' which is The Rural Architect by Joseph Gandy published in 1805 (Gandy was an excellent architect of the neo-classical school whose best known work is shown in the Phoenix and Pelican Insurance offices at Charing Cross. He was largely employed on domestic architecture) and 3 books that are 'In the Press'; on page 2, 15 books lately published for J. Harding, London; on page 3 One book 'Designs for Cottages, Cottage Farms, and other Rural Buildings; and on page 4 again 6 books lately published for J. Harding. The catalogue also includes The catalogue was printed by M'Millan, Bow Street, Covent Garden [not in BNF].

Top edge gilt. Good, well preserved prints but a few are a bit faded and slightly damaged.Album with 33 original photographs mounted on cardboard. The photos show various Euorpean cathedrals, churches and palaces. They contain a.o. Notre Dame de Paris, The Sainte Chapelle in Paris, the Palazzio Vecchio in Florence, the Tower of Pisa, Westminster Abbey in London, Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, the Cathedral of Burgos, the Cathedral of Milan etc. And a few show details of monuments. Most are unsigned by a few give names of the photographers or publishers. (Giacomo Brogi - died 1882; Stengel & Markert - active between 1885 and 1889; Bolletti - c. 1880 - 1890).

1901. Leipzig, n.d. (c. 1901). 384 pages followed by 9 additional leaves. Small 4to. Original limp cloth stamped in darker red, black and white in Jugendstil style. (minor rubbing and a small crack near the top of front, back hinge cracked). Previous owner's name on front pastedown. A small fraction of the pages show minor soiling, a pencil notation or a short closed tear and one small cut-out. Fold-out at the end has an edge which is crumpled and a small tear. Two supplements laid in, a detailed listing of fonts and type faces, and a list of prices for vignettes. This encyclopedic specimen book of the Leipzig type foundry and printing supply house J.G. Schelter & Giesecke features, as the title indicates, all kinds of decoration for supplying printing of every type. On the title page, the firm boasts of winning a grand prize in 1900 in Paris (presumably at the Exposition Universelle). 1777. Paris, Le Breton, 1777. 647pp. Contemporary mottled calf (some restaurations). Spine gold tooled. A nice and clean copy. An almanac is a book containing the days, weeks and months of the year together with information about festivals and holidays, ecclesiastical festivals, astronomical data, and often other information. The Almanach Royal was the official French Almanac that also gave lists of the members of the Royal Family, Church Officials, Officers, Ambassadors etc. etc. It was widely read by everyone who needed to know about the current state of the French administrative system.

1771. Romae, Typis. Sac. Congregationis de Propag. Fide, 1771. Woodcut vignette on titlepage. 16pp. (some foxing). 19th century blue wrappers. One of the rare publications of the Propagande Fide that was established in 1626 for propaganda among the Eastern peoples. Ferdinand II presented Illyrian types for a missal, and the Mediciean and other Oriental types from the Stamperia Vaticana were added to its stock, while Stefano Paolini engraved others. It continued its existence throughout the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries: Bodoni received his early training here. In 1789 most of the types were taken to Paris, where in 1805 an edition of the Lord's Prayer in 150 languages was printed as a compliment at the time of Napoleon's coronation. Much of the type still remains at the Imprimerie Nationale. [c.f. Birrell & Garnett 14].

All texts within decorative borders. Later marbled boards with green titleshield on spine. Edges stained red. Several pages browned but a very good and clean copy. Lacks the last leaf. The Alphabetum is written by Melchior Carpanius (here revised by Cajetanus Mantegatius) and the introduction by the editor Johannes Christopher Amaduzzi. Second edition (first 1776) of the first work to be printed in Burmese characters. The types were partly recast in this edition. Birrell & Garnett 21. Cordier BI 351. (some foxing throughout) First separate publication of this work which formed a paper read before the Institut National des Sciences et Arts, and was first printed in the fourth volume of its Mémoires (1802). Daunou was born August 18, 1761, at Boulogne-sur-Mer. He was admitted a brother of the Oratorians in 1777. From his youth up he was distinguished for his exemplary piety, his studious habits, and his receptive mind. He passed through the stormy days of the French revolution, and was arrested and thrown into prison, but was soon acquitted. Subsequently he rose to great eminence, and was made a peer of France in 1839. Some years before, he had been appointed "Garde générale des Archives du royaume", and has special opportunities of pursuing his studies in biography and literary history, to which he devoted many years. Some light foxing but a nice clean copy in slightly later half cloth with brown paper boards (a bit rubbed and some staining on the boards). Original front and back covers pasted-on. The backcover contains a short list of the principal works by Ponce.Fifteen plates of engravings of ceilings etc. engraved by Nicholas Ponce (1746 - 1831).

1781. A Lille, de l'Imprimerie de N.J.B. Peterinck-Cramé, 1781. 4pp. Woodcut border at the beginning. Modern wrappers. Decree for controlling all books entering into France and measures to be taken to avoid the 'smuggling' of books.

1718. A Dijon, par J. Ressayre, 1718. 4pp. Charming woodcut headpiece depicting two angels holding the royal arms.

1766. A Rennes, chez Vatar, 1766. 4pp. Unbound, as issued (edges of paper a bit damaged and with a small whole in margin of page 3/4). The Manuscript witth the title "Troisiémes Remonstrances du Parlement de Paris" is condemned by the Parlement of Bretagne because after research it showed that said manuscript was a changed copy of the original text.

1730. Grenoble, chez Gaspar Giroud, (1730). In the past decrees could be sent for free, however now it will cost money and the present decree says that it must remain the way it was, so no costs for sending decrees.

1716. Dijon, Jean Ressayre, 1716. 4to. 5pp. Two sheets folded, unbound as issued. The contents of Papal bulls etc. don't always please the French government. Hence they forbid the publication and sale of those bulls when not approved by the court beforehand. Only bulls etc. that are accompanied by a 'lettre de patent' of the king can be sold without punishment.
