A remarkably crisp copy of an apparently unrecorded Victorian edition of an abridged version of the standard children's catechism, issued at the behest of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for 'such as are of weaker capacity', the first recorded edition of which was published in 1683. . 16mo.

A trifle rubbed and a little faded; remaining spectacularly handsome nonetheless. 39 silver gelatin/printing-out-paper photographs, half plate (114x140mm) to 360 x 270mm, mounted on 23 leaves. A suitably imposing album marking the launch of HMS Ajax, constructed by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering at their shipyard in Greenock, and launched from there on 21st March 1912. The eventual construction cost was just shy of £2m. The third of four dreadnought battleships built for the Navy, powered by two sets of Parsons direct-drive steam turbines, Ajax's service - which included the Battle of Jutland, the Action of 19th August 1916 and the British intervention in the Russian Civil War of 1919 - was relatively shortlived; she was scrapped in 1924 under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty. . A clutch of five scarce mid-eighteenth-century song sheets issued by Durham-based printer George Walker (1807-1888), including 'Sleep gentle lady' from composer Henry R. Bishop's (1786-1855) opera Clari; 'The maniac' by Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818); 'The woodpecker' by Thomas Moore (1779-1852); and 'Cheer boys, cheer' written by Scottish poet Charles Mackay (1814-1889) for Henry Russell's (1812-1900) production The emigrant's progress around 1855. A collection of nineteen playbills, all apparently unrecorded, announcing performances at the Theatre Royal, York throughout the 1820s. Many of the performances featured actor John Langford Pritchard (1799-1850), a regular on the York circuit from the summer season of 1821. Plays staged include: English writer and Shakespearean editor Nicholas Rowe's (1674-1718) penultimate tragedy Jane Shore, first performed at Drury Lane in February 1714 and staged 19 times in its first run. An archive of administrational ephemera, spanning the final decades of the nineteenth- century, relating to the Roxburghe Club; the world's oldest society of bibliophiles. The spur to the Club's foundation was the sale of the extensive library of John Ker, third Duke of Roxburghe (1720-1804), which took place over 46 days in 1812. The auction was eagerly followed by bibliophiles, the highlight being the sale of the first dated edition of Boccaccio's Decameron, printed by Christophorus Valdarfer at Venice in 1471, and sold to the Marquis of Blandford for £2,260, the highest price ever given for a book at that time. A collection of 31 early satirical etchings by caricaturist James Sayers (1748-1823), depicting contemporary political figures, including Burke, Fox, and Effingham. Unlike the majority of contemporary caricaturists, Sayers did not take the side of the opposition against the governments of the day, instead devoting his efforts to supporting Pitt and mercilessly lampooning the Fox-North coalition and condemning the French Revolution. A coherent sammelband of 44 pamphlets by John Christopher Augustus Voelcker (1822-1884) on agricultural chemistry and associated subjects. Voelcker made a valuable contribution to the application of chemistry to practical farming, serving as chemistry professor to the Cirencester Agricultural College (1849-63) and as consulting chemist to the Royal Agricultural Society (1857-1884). Whilst residing in London (from 1863) his advice was constantly sought in technical and legal inquiries, such as questions of sewage and metropolitan water supply. The present collection covers a wide range of topics, from soil composition, the commercial value of artificial manures, milk production, and poisonous cheese. .

A remarkable assembly of material relating to the elections for the two Oxford borough and two Oxfordshire county seats in the early nineteenth century, largely focusing on the 1812 General Election, where John Atkyns-Wright, John Ingram Lockhart, Francis Almeric Spencer and John Fane were, respectively, duly elected as Members of Parliament.

A leaf from the Kelmscott Press' 'The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer now newly imprinted', taken from Book IV of his epic poem Troilus and Criseyde. Founded in 1891 in Hammersmith by famed designer William Morris (1834-1896), Kelmscott looked to the earliest days of printing to recreate the styles and techniques of the original 15th century typesetting. The result set a new standard for book design, featuring 87 illustrations and decorative borders. This leaf from book IV describes the poem's hero, Troilus, distraught in grief after learning his lover Criseyde has been exchanged for information with the Greeks, praying for death to 'cometh and endeth peyne'. .
