TLS. A typed letter signed "Wm Green" as President of the American Federation of Labor on his personal letterhead. He wrote: "I sincerely hope and trust I may always so conduct myself and so administer the affairs of the American Federation of Labor as to merit and maintain your high esteem, friendship and regard. I can truly say that I shall endeavor to meet the difficult problems which have arisen out of the unemployment situation, as well as out of the division which was created within the ranks of labor through the formation of the C.I.O. in a patient, judicious and constructive way. I noted with very great interest the working card which you enclosed and which shows clearly that you are a member of the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electrical Railway Employees of America. This organization was chartered by and is in full affiliation with the American Federation of Labor... ". The letter is in very fine condition overall with a large and dark autograph.

ABRAHAM “JACK” LINCOLN II (1873-1890). Abraham “Jack” Lincoln was the only son of Robert Todd Lincoln. He died in London of blood poisoning, where his father was Ambassador, after unsuccessful surgery to repair a carbuncle; he was just sixteen. He is buried at Arlington in his father’s plot. SB. 303 pgs. No date. No place. A book, Brake Up from the Lake Shore Series, signed “A Lincoln A6” by the grandson and namesake of President Abraham Lincoln. He signed on the first free endpage. “A6” refers to the book catalog number in his private library. The book is bound in brown cloth with gilt stamping. It is in very good condition overall with very light wear to the spine. This volume originally came from Dr. Norman Boas at Seaport Autographs. Of all of the members of the Lincoln family, Jack Lincoln’s autograph is among the rarest due to his early death.

HENRY W. SLOCUM (1827-1894). Slocum was a Union Army General who saw action at First Manassas, Antietam and Chancellorsville, and then was a Representative from New York. DS. 2pg. 31” x 33”. May 1863. Headquarters of the 12th Army Corps, near Stafford County, Virginia. An enormous, partly-printed folio document signed “H. W. Slocum” as commander of the 12th Army Corps in the American Civil War. At the top, it is titled “Return of the Twelfth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, Commanded by Major General Henry W. Slocum, for the month of May, 1863.” This partially-printed report details the 12th’s heavy involvement in the recent Battle of Chancellorsville. It gives details about divisions, brigades, leadership, personnel, etc., alongside narratives of the first and second divisions’ action at Chancellorsville. It is signed “S. E. JOHN McLEAN (1785-1861). McLean, a politician from Ohio, served in a number of roles, including Commissioner of the General Land Office and Postmaster General. He was an Associate Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court and was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Jackson in 1829 until his death. He was one of the two Justices to vote against the Dred Scott decision. McLean was frequently mentioned as a Presidential candidate. AMS. 2pg. 7 ½” x 12 ½”. December 18, 1846. Washington, D.C. An autograph manuscript signed “Cornelia J. Orme” and a letter signed “Maria W.D. Orme”. It is addressed to Supreme Court Justice John McLean. The first page is an acrostic, written by the young poet Cornelia. The first letters spell out the words “HONJOHNMCLEANOFOHIO” and reads “How shall my simple muse aspire Of him to sing whose graced sublime strain? Noblest of Men for subject for the Lyre. ROSE ELIZABETH CLEVELAND (1846-1918). The sister of President Grover Cleveland, Rose Elizabeth Cleveland was acting First Lady of the United States from 1885 to 1886, when her brother married. Afterwards, she became an educator and intellectual. ALS. 2pgs. March 27, 1885. Washington. An autograph letter signed “Elizabeth Cleveland” as acting First Lady of the United States. A few weeks after his brother’s Inauguration, Cleveland invited a Mrs. Laughton and her friend to visit her. She wrote on “Executive Mansion, Washington” letterhead. “I shall be delighted to see you and your friend this evening, at any moment after eight oclock. With my great esteem Yours most sincerely Elizabeth Cleveland”. In very good condition with a horizontal fold.

ELIZABETH CADY STANTON (1815-1902). Stanton was an influential American suffragette and civil rights activist. ALS. 2pgs. November 5, 1893. 26 West 61st St. An autograph letter signed “Elizabeth Cady Stanton”. Stanton wrote to Dr. Charles E. Rice about early abolitionists. “Dear Sir Many thanks for the perusal of enclosed letter. It shows what struggles in the great battle for freedom…early abolitionists had in order to raise money to carry on the work. I am sorry that I cannot help you to any letters from the persons you mention. With kind regards. Yours cordially Elizabeth Cady Stanton”. It is in fine condition with light folds.

ALS. Hight was an American Actor. ALS. 1pg. 5" x 8". August 22 [No year]. Roxbury, MA. An autograph letter signed "Ferd. Hight" to Charles S. Greene, mentioning Edwin Booth, the legendary American actor and brother of presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth: "Yours of this date received. I was a member of the company at the National Theatre, Washington, D.C. in 1853. Commenced with Edwin Booth, I think, in Nov'r of that year, and remained until theatre was destroyed by fire in February 1857." The letter also mentions the historic National Theatre, which was founded in 1835 and was destroyed by fire and rebuilt five times during the 19th Century. Of the many stars to grace the stage of America's oldest touring theatre were Junius Brutus Booth, who appeared in the first season of the theatre, and his two brothers, Edwin Thomas and John Wilkes. GLORIA SWANSON (1899-1983). Swanson was an American actress best known for her role in Sunset Boulevard. PS. 4” x 6”. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed “To James Murfin Greetings Gloria Swanson”. The photograph is a black-and-white image of a middle-aged Swanson looking off to the left with a half-smile. James Murfin (1929-1987) left a legacy of more than a dozen books, numerous articles, and other works writing for the National Park Service and various historical publications. The photograph is printed on cardstock paper and is in excellent condition.

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON “ADIRONDACK” MURRAY (1840-1904). Murray was an author whose writings celebrated the Adirondack Mountains in New York and made them a popular tourist destination. He was also a minister. An archive of three items related to Adirondack Murray: a) ALS. 1pg. January 22, 1896. Grand Hotel, New York City. An autograph letter signed “Murray” to his daughter, Ruby. “My dear Ruby Will you kindly tell Mamma that I arrived here safely and that Mr. Harvey is here and that I shall (probably) not be able to come home before Saturday. HAROLD STARK (1880-1972). Stark was United States Chief of Naval Operations during World War II. PS. 8” x 10”. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed “H R Stark”. The black-and-white image shows Stark dressed in uniform and writing at his desk. He inscribed and signed the bottom margin: “To Mr. Orland with all good wishes and Happy Remembrances H R Stark”. The photograph is matted and framed.

In part: "The subject that I propose to you is the question of Oregon and a very important it is too. It is clear beyond calculation that if Oregon is not annexed to this government that Great [Britain] will have but if we want to own half of North American Land. England, the other then let England have Oregon, Texas, and Canada and Mexico too. But if we reflect back to annexations and then look forward to future events we may safely run the risk of bringing Oregon into our union but if we take into our heads these foolish whimsical stories that are hooted about in every corner of the streets by a particular set of... shall never get anything we should be governed by half the world." (SUTRO BATHS). Located in San Francisco, Sutro Baths was the largest indoor swimming venue in the world when it opened in March 1896. It was owned by San Francisco mayor Adolph Sutro (1830-1898). Sutro Baths burned to the ground in 1966. An advertisement for an August 30, 1896 swimming tournament at the newly-opened Sutro Baths in San Francisco. The headliner of the event was Charles Cavill (1870-1897), a member of the noted Australian Cavill family of champion swimmers. This was Cavill’s first American appearance; he would drown in California the following year. Prominent American swimmers were also featured. The poster is in good condition with several water stains and chipping to the margins.

DS. 4pgs. 7 ½” x 12”. December 1875. Somerset County, New Jersey. A contract for the sale of a Somerset County, New Jersey newspaper, signed “C J Wilson”, “D. W. Wilson” and “V.D. Honeyman”. The contract sates, in part: “In consideration of one dollar to us in hand paid, and for the further consideration to be made as hereafter specified, we, Charles J .Wilson, editor and publisher of the ‘Somerset Gazette’, a newspaper printed and published in Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey, and David W. AL JOLSON (1886-1950). Jolson, an actor, jazz singer, and Broadway star, frequently performed in blackface, most notably in the 1927 film The Jazz Singer, one of the first “talking” movies. PS. N.d. N.p. A black-and-white photograph inscribed and signed “To Meyer Davis, With best wishes Al Jolson”. Meyer Davis was an American bandleader. The photo is in very good condition; it backed to a board and two corners are chipped.

ADS. 1pg. 8” x 10”. June 24, 1865. Mobile, AL. A document signed “J.R. Groves” and “J. W. Keesco” regarding the opening of a grocery store in Mobile, AL, shortly after the end of the Civil War: “For and in consideration of services rendered, I mail the following agreement with J.R. Groves, to wit; I am to furnish a cash capital of not less than $10,000, ten thousand dollars, (to be increased as the business increases), to do a commission and grocery business in the City of Mobile, Alabama, Terms of business; I am neither to advance money nor accept bills unless the produce is in hand, or on its way with the bill of lading attached consigning it to me 2nd. After paying interest upon capital stock and expenses and losses, the profits, if any, are to be divided equally between myself and J. R. Groves. ALAN PATON (1902-1988). A South African author, Paton is best remembered for Cry, the Beloved Country. He was an outspoken opponent of apartheid. TLS. 1pg. 8” x 10”. November 5, 1962. South Africa. A typed letter signed “Alan Paton” on blue air mail stationery. He wrote to Mrs. Peter Scott of West Orange, New Jersey: “Thank you for your letter of October 23. At the moment THE LAND & PEOPLE OF SOUTH AFRICA is being revised, and I do not have a copy of the earlier edition. I have translations, but do not suppose you would want any of these. However, if you were to approach the publishers, J.B. Lippincott, 521 Fifth Avenue, New York 17, and ask them when the revised edition is likely to be out. I would be glad to autograph a copy for your fund raising effort, if the book were sent to me in time.” The Land & People of South Africa was published in 1955. The letter has a rough right edge and is in very good condition.

(KODIAK, ALASKA HUNTING PHOTOGRAPH ARCHIVE). An archive of nearly 100 black and white photographs emanating from a men’s hunting trip to Kodiak, Alaska about 1950. There are images of men with fishing rods and rifles, and dead bears, crabs, fish, moose and seals. Some photographs show the men inside the cabin relaxing, reading, sleeping and cooking. There are also photographs of the early planes that brought tourists, Alaskan scenery and small Alaskan towns. The images are in three sizes, 5” x 7”, 5” x 3” and 2 ½” x 4, and all are in fine condition with minor faults such as chipped corners. A fine frontier photography archive.

(ALASKA). Broadside. 1pg. 10” x 12”. 1895. Alaska. A Territory of Alaska broadside issued by Governor James Sheakley for the 1895 Thanksgiving. The Governor noted that “Our territory has been notably favored during the now-closing year, the people have made rapid progress in material prosperity, the population has received large additions by immigration, the mining and fishing industries have been abundantly rewarded, education, civilization and Christian influences more widely diffused, and the settlers in this new country are hopeful and contented…”. The proclamation has an embossed seal in the lower left corner and four mailing folds; it is matted in brown. Not in OCLC.

ALBERT CAMUS (1913-1960). Camus was a Nobel Prize-winning French author best known for his absurdism and works like The Stranger and The Plague. TMS. 5pgs. 1945. N.p. A lengthy typescript, in French, by Albert Camus. It concerns the Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939). This manuscript was Camus’s preface to the book L’Espagne Libre (Paris: Calman-Lévy, 1946). Writing just after World War II, in which he took an active role in the resistance against the Nazis, Camus muses back on the Spanish Civil War, often called a “dress rehearsal for World War II”. Camus felt personally connected to the Spanish Civil War, since his mother was Spanish.
