This work is the first book illustrated by Georges Bruyer (1883-1962), a Parisian painter-engraver who was noticed by the bookbinder, publisher and bookseller René Kieffer (1876-1963) and who subsequently became one of the most renowned artists of his time, notably for his engravings of the Great War or of small Parisian trades. Magnificent copy, one of twenty leading copies on vellum paper (out of a total print run of two hundred and fifty), containing three states of etchings including pure etching, a separate print of woodblocks on Japan peel and a watercolor unpublished full page. Unobtainable First Edition, of which we present what seems to be presently the only copy known. This pedagogic booklet for learning grammar and eloquence was composed by Pedro Guevara (dead in 1611). Originally from Belorado (province of Burgos), this humanist, about whom very little is known, was a pupil of the great Spanish humanist Francisco Sanchez de Brozas and the main discloser of Ramon Llull at the Court of Castile, where he had been appointed tutor of Infants Isabel and Catalina, daughters of King Philipp II to whom the work is dedicated. Composed in an atypical and somewhat confusing way with folding leaves not following the sense of reading, the work is illustrated with two large wood-engraved wheels where the concepts set by the author are schematized, with flavour of Lullian philosophy.…
