Publisher's original maroon cloth over bevelled boards with gilt titles and decoration to the upper board, repeated in blind to the lower board. All edges gilt. 11 unnumbered thick card leaves printed on rectos only, mounted on stubs, comprising a chromolithographic title page, followed by a preface by Rev. Samuel Wilberforce printed in red and black, and 9 chromolithographic leaves in the style of an illuminated manuscript, richly coloured and incorporating gold and silver. One leaf embellished with an original albumen photographic vignette. Expertly re-cased. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a hint of wear to the spine ends and corners. The contents with a small area of abrasion to the front pastedown and some scattered foxing (heavier to the endpapers) are otherwise in very good order. London: John Long, Ltd., 1925. First UK edition. Octavo. Publisher's original purple cloth with titles in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. Bottom edge untrimmed. Illustrated with 111 black and white photographs and two folding maps. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little wear and fading to the spine ends and a chip to the head of the spine. The contents with some occasional light foxing are otherwise in very good order throughout. The folding maps remain clean and crisp. The original dustwrapper with loss to the head of the spine panel, short splits to the joints, a little wear to the extremities, and some light scattered marking is otherwise also very good. A wide-ranging account of the adventures of the American journalist, war correspondent and travel writer Edward Alexander Powell (1879-1957) across East Africa during the early 1920s, copiously illustrated with original photographs by the author and Rexford W. Barton. Uncommon in the original early dustwrapper.

Contemporary 'cathedral binding' of full red morocco with embossed gothic architectural decoration to the boards and spine. Owner's name "A. Berriman" in gilt to the upper board and the date "Jan. 1. 1834" to the lower board. A very good copy, the binding firm with a little rubbing to the extremities and a small worm hole to foot of the lower joint. The contents with a some cracking to the rear hinge, a little scattered foxing and some minor creasing to a few page corners are otherwise in very good order. A charming miniature prayer book in an attractive gothic 'cathedral binding'.

Preston: John Harkness., [c.1841].. Broadside ballad on thin paper with wood-engraved headpiece depicting the pirate's bride. 95 x 255mm. There is a small chip to the blank bottom-left corner, a minor hole to the blank upper margin, a faint spot of toning to the left-hand side at the centre, and a little light creasing to the top-left corner, otherwise condition is very good. A nice example of a scarce, delicate, ephemeral production. A ballad forming the parting song of a pirate as he leaves his bride for the "Isle Hydra". As the text indicates, the pirate is a "corsair" en route to the Greek island of Hydra, implying that he is perhaps a Barbary pirate. These "Barbary corsairs", many of whom were Muslim, operated from the North African coast, predominantly seeking to capture slaves (of many ethnicities and religions) for the Barbary slave trade.
