Description:
This 1885 reprint from T. B. Peterson and Brothers is rebound (half binding of dark brown leather with light brown cloth). Illustrations supplied in facsimilie. Binding tight. Note in light pencil on first free fly leaf details binding and illustrations. These "bandittis" were criminal gangs that terrorized the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio and the territory of Iowa in the early to mid-19th century. The author, Edward Bonney (1807-1864) led a full life as an adventurer, miller, hotel keeper, city planner, counterfeiter, livery stable keeper, bounty hunter, private detective, postmaster, merchant, soldier. "Banditti of the Prairie" is his best known work and details his undercover effort to expose the killers of Colonel George Davenport.

Published in 1857, this copy is in a deluxe binding of three-quarter brown leather with marbled boards and page edges, as well as marbled endpapers. The cover's spine has five raised bands with gilt panels, and the gilt title is on black leather. Other deluxe features -- two hand-colored plates of birds. Pages are clean. PROBLEMS: Folding map is missing; last page of table of contents is missing; leather worn at edges and corners; marbled paper on cover is scuffed and worn; and edges of covers are worn to the boards. 630 pages. 150 engravings.
