Description:
CANADIAN CARRIERS' ADDRESS ON SILK WITH ANTI-AMERICAN SENTIMENTS
[CARRIERS' ADDRESS, CANADIAN]. Carrier Boys' Address for the Year A. D. 1857. Folio, double-column broadside on white silk, 14 3/4 x 12 1/4", text within very elaborate printer's decrative arched border, small cut of a railroad train between the first and second lines of the title. N.p. [Canada: 1856].
As is seldom the case, there is no newspaper named, but this is quite possibly an English-language Quebec newspaper. As a family we have been personally collecting, buying and selling printing on silk and satin for at least 60 years, and have handled many American silk carriers' addresses. That said, this is the first we have seen which is clearly Canadian. The elaborate border is headed at the top, "We Wish You All a Happy New Year," and the 1 5/8" base is a salute to Queen Victoria, "Vivat Regina." Indications this is Canadian are clear, with lines such as "But 'tis soothing and cheery,/ To the tired and weary,/ From Quebec to… Read More

LEWIS'S "TO THE READER" EXPLAINS HIS AFRICAN SLAVE CHARACTER, HIS "MISANTHROPIC NEGRO"
LEWIS, M[atthew] G[regory] "Monk". The Castle Spectre: A Drama. In Five Acts. First Performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury-Lane, on Thursday, December 14, 1797. By M. G. Lewis, M. P. Author of The Monk, &c.
8vo, disbound, pp. 103, [1] ad. London: Printed for J. Bell, 1798.
First Edition. An extraordinary commercial success, although not a universal favorite of the critics. To the critics who objected to his use of black slaves in a Gothic story, he defended himself by saying that if he could "have produced the same effect by making my heroine blue, blue I should have made her." "As far as Lewis's search for novelty and striking effects is concerned, it is interesting to highlight the character of Hassan, an African servant...Hassan is in Ormond's service because the earl has cruelly snatched him from his family, and, hating the white race that he considers responsible for his sufferences, the black slave… Read More

The broadside describes Weller's trial: "Yesterday a gentleman of a silky appearance, and prepossessing manners, was placed at the bar, charged with clipping, cutting, maiming, and otherwise disfiguring the lawful language of His Majesty's subjects, so as to render it quite unintelligible to all plain-spoken Englishmen...The first witness for the prosecution was the letter V; who stated that on several public occasions, but more particularly at Wardmotes and Vestries, the defendant had most shamelessly mangled and ill used him...The only witness for the defendant, was a Mr. Bos [i.e. "Boz," Charles Dickens], who said he had known the defendant some… Read More

Fine copy of the First Edition of the first standard American rules of the game; one of two variants, priority unknown. With a page-and-a-half description of the game, followed by 53 rules. The National Croquet Association was founded in 1879, but it wasn't until October 4, 1882, that representatives of twenty-five American croquet clubs met on the grounds of the New York Croquet Club and adopted a standard set of rules for the popular nine-wicket game. The association was active until the 1890s when the popularity of lawn tennis surged, and interest in croquet, viewed as a gambling game, diminished.
