Rare catalogue, printed in Marseille, of the library of the celebrated Provence bibliographer Joseph-Jean Rive (1730-1791) who was in particular the librarian of one of the most famous bibliophile of his time, the duke of La Vallière, before becoming librarian of Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence. His library, summing up more than two thousands five hundred lots, contained many rarities - among which a Gutenberg Bible (lacking two leaves) - and it was purchased in block by Chauffrad, "juré-priseur", and Colomby, a bookseller from Marseille. French soldier Claude-Alexandre de Villeneuve, comte de Vence (1702-1760), was one of the great art collectors and bibliophiles of his time. He had close ties with the Marquis Marc-René de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson (1722-1782), himself a great collector, and was a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. This catalog of the auction organized after his death is divided into two parts. The first lists the works in the library, while the second is devoted entirely to paintings, drawings and prints. Considered one of the most important libraries in France at the time, the collection was exceptionally rich in works on French history, and more specifically on Provence. In leaves, in a half-chagrin slipcase forming a binding, preserved in a cardboard slipcase (Binding of the period). First Edition. An extremely rare work consisting of 60 double leaves, each containing an extremely thin strip of a different tree variety. Each lamella is attached to the second flap of the double leaflet, in which an oval window has been cut, allowing each species of wood to be observed through transparency, and its structure and particularities (veins, etc.) to be noted. This work was intended for students at the Ecole Forestière de Nancy. The author was a professor of forestry and forest inspector in Hohenheim. Some copies contain 4 additional pages of text. A very fine copy.

Extremely rare complete suite of engravings by the Lorraine painter Théodore Valerio (1819-1879), who was one of the first French artists to depict the countries of Central Europe, until then little visited. These drawings were made in extreme circumstances, during the first moments of the Crimean War. In 1852, the Eastern Question had just opened; Turkey called up all its troops to arms.
