Description:
Set of 36 handcoloured lithographs after satirical illustrations by Jean-Gabriel Scheffer from What one says and what one thinks, Little Scenes of the World. An album of rare lithographs that depict comical scenes of daily life in Paris during the reign of King Charles X, in the Restoration era. Women in the voluminous puff-sleeved dresses and bonnets of the time, the men in elegant jackets and pants, lounging in restaurants, cafes, libraries, gardens and galleries. With title page and 36 hand-coloured plates lithographed and printed by Gihaut Frères in Paris (last six plates printed by Charles Tilt, London). These delightful satirical scenes mock the hypocrisies and annoyances of bourgeois society, in the same way as Thomas Rowlandson depicted the Miseries of Human Life in Regency England. The captions show what the characters say on the left, and what they really think on the right. Women flatter Plain Janes and ugly men, men flatter ugly women, a widow takes a new lover before her husband's… Read More

From Pierre de la Mésangère's suite of plates Costumes des Femmes du Pays de Caux, Paris, 1827.
The fashion plates engraved by Georges-Jacques Gatine after original watercolours by Louis-Marie Lanté and Benoit Pécheux
The women of the region famously wore tall lace bonnets that dated back to the middle ages.
"Benoit Pécheux, a renowned painter, a specialist in Italian frescoes had worked in France since the Italian campaign and ran a workshop of itinerant Italian painters. In 1811, the church of Yvetot contacted him to decorate the chapel of the Virgin. The same year, he decorated the dome of Saint-Romain in Rouen. He was also called to Limpiville, Fécamp and Le Havre. On Sundays and holidays, he rubs shoulders with Cauchoises adorned with original headdresses and draws them before returning to Paris.

Description:
A very good selection of handcoloured costume plates from a rare volume
The plates were published in booklets of 6 every 20 days: 2Fr 50 centimes for subscribers to the Bibliotheque universelle des Voyages, and 3Fr for non-subscribers. It's rare to find complete sets in any condition.
With 47 plates (of 90 published), one duplicated (Pl. 81)
All very finely hand-coloured with vibrant hues
Mostly by Leopold Massard, a few by Ferdinand Wachsmuth and J. David
Many of the titles on the plates do not match the subject. Thus an Indian Raja is labeled Emperor of Japan, a Burmese noblewoman described as Japanese, California mislabeled as Mexico, Rio de Janeiro as Cincinatti, Alaska mistaken for Greenland, the Marshall Islands for Byron Isle, Polynesia for South America, etc. This seems to be common with other issues of these plates.
"Drawn by Wachsmut[h] and Massard after the original sketches made by the explorers themselves. Engraved on steel and handcoloured with great care."
The plates are adapted from… Read More
