With 18 photographic plates. ¶ First French edition of the narrative of the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile flight over the North Pole in 1926, in the airship 'Norge', from King's Bay in West Spitzbergen to Teller, Alaska. The airship 'Norge' was in fact the Italian airship 'Italia' which was acquired with the help of Mussolini. Arctic Bibliography 410 (Norwegian edition).-- (Small tear in one leaf).

Each publication has a different wood-cut coat-of-arm (Habsburg - Austrian?), and a wood-cut initial. - Two rare official publications by the Austrian Government related to the break out of the great Dysentery epidemic in the Southern Netherlands during 1779 and 1783. Very rare and in very good condition.

Stuttgart,: Gustav Fischer,, 1976.. 822, [iv, blank] pp. Royal 8vo (17 x 24,5 cm.). Original publisher's cloth. With 18 maps and 543 photographic illustrations of which many in full colour. A good copy of the 3rd. revised edition of this, now obsolete, classic standard work. Lavisly illustrated and still useful for the amateur cactus grower.

(Elberfeld (now Wuppertal),: Sam. Lueas,, 1838.. [ii], 31, [i, blank]; [28, blank] pp. 8vo (13,5 x 22 cm.). Contemporary marbled boards, edges red. ¶ Very rare, only 5 copies in the WorldCat. Fuhlrott "Obtained a doctorate from Bonn (1830); became a science teacher at Elberfeld, subsequently vice-director of the Realschule. Won modest recognition as a naturalist. In 1856, he received fossilized bones found by quarry workers in Felfhofer cave of the Neander Valley; Fohlrott identified them as "Homo neanderthalensis", but reaction to his discovery was hostile, and extensive controversy ensued. It was not until after his death and the discovery of fossil men at Spy (Belgium), and Gibraltar that opposition to the notion of Neanderthal man was finally silenced"(DSB).

A classic on the make up art in a rare Dutch translation.--(Half title spotted; partly some dust soiling or an occasional foxing; a mediocre copy thus priced accordingly).

First edition, rare. Garrison & Morton 2609.1: "Soemmerring noted an association between pipesmoking and cancer of the lip (p. 109)". PP. 183-223 are a chronological list (1509-1794) of 313 works on absorbing vessels and related subject. This list is concluded by an alphabetically index on authors. Soemmerring, a very able anatomist, was a believer in the ancient notion that man's soul was housed in the cerebrospinal fluid. --(paper slighly age-toned; some scattered light foxing; small hole in the blank porting of the title-page; some slight dust soiling).

With several woodcut headers, footers and initials. BMN. I, 200.First edition, very rare. A considerably expanded edition of author's thesis (Leiden, 1762). Rouppe travelled much in the West-Indies as a naval physician for the Dutch West Indische Companie. The text is based on author's own observations and experiences, including sanitation and sanitary measures, venereal diseases, fevers, cancers etc. An important part (pp. 90-212) deals with scurvy. One of the last parts, "de morbus in portubus" is of particularly interest. Te Amsterdam, bij: Lodewijk van Es,, 1830.. xiii [i], [82] pp. Folio (25.5 x 40 cm.). recent 3/4 grained chesnut morocco, uncut.. With 47 plates on 38 engraved copper plates, of which 8 with partial contemporary hand colouring. The plates are re-engraved after the plates de Wandelaer made for the Albinus edition of Eustachius (1744). ¶ Very rare, being a reissue of the remainder of the original plates and text sheets of 1798 with only a new title page and preface by Suringar. 'A romantic history attaches to this fine collection of plates, drawn by Eustachius himself and completed in 1552. They remained unprinted and forgotten in the Vatican Library until discovered in the early 18th century, and were then presented by Pope Clement XI to his physician Giovanni Maria Lancisi. Original printed boards (dust soiled, worn and damaged in places; slightly loose in binding). ¶ A quite remarkable and original work. Coincidentally written in the spirit of Corvisart's 'éducation médicale des sens'. Suringar, professor at Leiden, was an excellent clinician and outstanding teacher. His medico-historico contributions are of lasting value, especially his history of medical education at the Leiden University.

With some, (a few folded,) illustrations ¶ An important work on the illustreous Dutch Bulb Speculations. The work begins with a historical introduction, and continues with 45 of the most important pamphlets on Bulb speculation (the pamphlets are represented in facsimile or reset). The work is concluded by a catalogue of pamphlets (1636-1637) compiled by J.C. Westerman. The whole is finely printed on handmade paper.--(N.E.H.A., 11).

The publishing house of Graauw Bros. is one of the most curious Amsterdam publishers of the period. With their progresive mind and alternative views, they, as no other publishers, promoted the ideas of "modern" sexual hygiene and reformation among the labour and middle class people. This guide on contraceptives was one of their most popualr publications. Pp. 2-4 of the cover gives a list of their publications. -- Fine copy.

(Weight of the set is 8 kg. and might require additional postal charges).
