Association copy, inscribed on the title page in the Nobel Prize winner's small script: "For Eric and Tania Idle, from Jim Watson."  Eric Idle is the English actor, comedian, musician and writer best (and very hilariously) known as a member of the British surreal comedy group Monty Python. Laid in is a typed letter signed (TLS) on Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory stationary, roughly 4 x 7", dated July 2003. Conveying the book, it's addressed to Tania, Eric Idle's wife, and is seven sentences in all, perhaps most intriguingly: "Being, like you, on Paul Allen's super St. Petersburg weekend was a once in a lifetime experience." A really interesting specimen: A hardcover "dummy copy" of this Teale title, neither a finished advance copy, uncorrected proof, nor excerpt. Instead it's meant to give the feel and flavor of the book, and may have been produced only for internal use at the printers and/or publishing house. It consists of green cloth boards without title or any text on front or spine; photographic endpapers at front (but not at rear); then front matter including a half-title, title page, table of contents with zeros for page numbers, and one page of Teale's intro.  His intro runs on to a second page, but the remainder of that page appears possibly to be placeholder text and is hard to make sense of. The remainder of this book is black and white plates with Teale's photos, but they are awkwardly laid out so that there are blank spreads in the mix. Fresno: Panorama West Books, 1985. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Good. An association copy, signed by co-editor Shirley Sargent on an affixed label with the printed inscription: "May 1, 1985, For Ann, who listened, encouraged, proof read, and numbered!" This is number 33 (numbered by Ann!) of 750 copies. We have seen one other signed copy and it was also signed via a label. The recipient was likely Ann Matteson who is thanked in the acknowledgments; she was a devoted outdoorswoman and denizen of many National Parks, finally Yosemite (one notes her son was named Muir). Sargent was a prolific historian of Yosemite. Her bestselling book was John Muir in Yosemite National Park (1972). A very good plus book with some subtle waviness to the upper corner of the text block and light soiling/staining to upper text block face, otherwise fine in green cloth with gold lettering; in a good only jacket that is heavily dampstained and wrinkled (accounting for that slight waviness). Inscribed on the half-title page: "For Marc -- Nice to meet you, & thanks for coming -- Best, Rick Bass, Oxford '89."  Uncommon for also being inscribed by the book's illustrator, Bass's then-wife, with a separate pen: "For Marc -- Thanks! Best, Elizabeth Hughes, Oxford 1989." As of this writing there are no other copies signed by Hughes available. This is Bass's first book, seventeen essays about his family's deer hunting tradition in the Texas Hills Country and the natural history of deer. It launched Bass, an oil geologist, to an impressive writing and environmental activist career. A fine book in a very good price-clipped jacket with sunning to spine, otherwise in great shape.

Yes, a bit of a head scratcher ("udder" is indeed transcribed correctly here), some inside rec league joke. Maybe they played softball together? Arthur P. Morgan, who worked in finance, was a fellow Deerfield Prep and Princeton University graduate, and then a neighbor. Among other civic activity, he was on the board of the Princeton Public Library. Second printing, 1981, a near fine book due to light sun-fading to top edge of front board; similar faint sunning to that top edge on a near fine jacket, which has one half-inch tear to the top of the rear panel.
