Description:
A copy of the first English translation of Thomas Mann's Early Sorrows, done by Helen Tracy Lowe-Porter (1876-1963), who is most notable for having been the translator for most of Thomas Mann's works for their first appearance in English. This volume features attractive black and red marbled covers, which have some discolouration on the front in particular. There is a small paper title label on the spine which is also damaged. There is also some damage to the fabric and board of the spine. This edition features endpapers with a whimsical floral motif. There is the signature of a previous own on the front flyleaf.

Description:
Sir Charles G.D. Roberts (1860-1943), known as the "Father of Canadian Poetry," also wrote prose, and is particularly well-known for his animal stories. His experiences growing up in New Brunswick were the primary source of inspiration for the short stores found in Earth's Enigma (1896), which recount various aspects of the natural world and the different ways in which humanity engages with them.
This edition is in Fair condition. There is some significant discolouration to the boards and spine, and the lettering on the spine is very faded. The front and back hinges are cracked, however the pages are all present and the binding appears to be secure. The tops of the pages are gilded and this gilding is in excellent condition. There are signatures from a previous owner both on the title page, as well as the front flyleaf, which in and of themselves are historically interesting, reflecting the travels of the original owner from Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1898 to Paris, France in 1900. Written by Samuel A. White, Empery, later known by the title Law of the Land, is a novel of adventure and romance set in the Canadian wilderness, and following Basil Dreaulond, a courier for the Hudson's Bay Company.
Samuel A. White was a Canadian author known especially for his tales of adventure and romance centred on his own experiences on the Canadian frontier.
This copy is in good condition. There is some slight wear to the fabric covering the boards, particularly to the corners and the top and bottom of the spine. There is some mild discolouration to the edges of the pages, but internally they are in excellent condition, and the text is unblemished. The book has a very slight lean.

This book is in Good condition, with a love blue fabric covering the boards, and a gold gilt title, which as some fading and wear. The title on the spine is particularly worn. The pages inside, however, are clean and bright and entirely legible.
