London: Faber and Faber, 1970. 46pp. Original publisher's blue cloth boards lettered silver, with the decorative unclipped dustwrapper with additional price label stuck to the front inner flap. Wrapper is smoke-stained and shelf-worn with no losses. Edges a little bumped, internally bright and clean. From the estate of Olwyn Hughes, recently dispersed, without indication of such; the smoke damage is the result of an errant cigarette dropped by Olwyn down the back of her settee, which caused a serious fire. Illustrated throughout by R. A. Brandt. The first reprint after the 1963 first edition of Hughes' third work for children. Olwyn Hughes (1928-2016) was a translator, agent and literary executor who had worked in Paris for NATO, Martonplay, and King Peter II of Yugoslavia, among others. After the death of her sister-in-law Sylvia Plath, she returned to England to assist her brother, Ted Hughes, raise his young children, though also took over the management of both his career and… Read More

Description:
Leipsic [i.e. Leipzig]: Karl Baedeker, Publisher, 1903. 571pp, [1]. With 53 maps, 10 plans, and seven panoramas. Original publisher's blind-ruled red cloth, lettered in gilt, marbled edges. Extremities rubbed and spotted, spine sunned. Later bookplate of George Lowe, beneath earlier inked ownership inscriptions, to FFEP, small holes and tape repairs to initial map. From the library of New Zealand-born mountaineer George Lowe (1924-2013), a member of the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition, the ninth mountaineering expedition to attempt the first ascent of Everest, and the first confirmed to have succeeded when Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the summit on 29th May. The day prior, Lowe had led an advance guard, wielding an ice axe with legendary skill, to cut a path into the Lhotse Face to the final camp (1,000 feet below the peak), preparing the route for Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Following this achievement Lowe became a New Zealand representative on the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic… Read More

Description:
London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co, 1864. [4], 297pp, [1]. Nineteenth-century blue cloth, lettered in gilt. A trifle rubbed to joints, spine, else a crisp copy. Some spotting to preliminaries, slightly lighter to text itself. Evidently a family copy, inscribed C.W.C. Oman to FFEP - most likely the author's son, Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman (1860-1946). A family copy of an atmospheric novel following the Templemore family from England to Bengal in the final days of East India Company rule - when 'the first faint mutterings of the storm which was to dash the crazy fabric of British power' were stirring - by Charles Philip Austin Oman (1825-76). Diversions, full of details of Anglo-Indian social custom, include hunting alligators and boar, visits to the Calcutta Botanical Gardens, 'a picnic in the Himalayahs' and 'Indian Jugglers'. A Calcutta-born Indigo planter who spent most of his adult life in the Himalayan foothills, Oman is known to have contributed anonymously to… Read More

Description:
Otley: Printed by the Yorkshire Joint Stock Publishing and Stationery Company, [s.d., c. 1865] 12pp. With several engraved illustrations in the text. Stitched, as issued, into original publisher's pictorial green wrappers. Slightest of rubbing to extremities. A rare survival, in crisp original state, of a primer designed to instruct a juvenile readership in basic numeracy and reading comprehension. The Yorkshire Joint Stock Publishing and Stationery Company, who issued the work, purchased the premises of Otley-based printer Webb Millington in 1863. Their publications, predominantly chapbooks, toy books, and pictorial lessons, commonly used Webb Millington's old 'stock-blocks'. This re-use of texts, woodcuts, and engravings by make dating uncertain. The company does not appear to have survived beyond 1875. OCLC locates copies at six locations (BL, NLW, Philadelphia, Toronto, Trinity College Dublin, and Western Michigan); COPAC adds no further. . 12mo.

New York: R. H. Russell, 1899. [32], 78pp, [2]. Uncut in original publisher's cloth-backed drab paper boards, lettered in gilt, housed in recent custom drab paper slipcase. A trifle rubbed and marked. Later inked ownership inscription to FEP, else internally clean and crisp. The first American trade edition of James McNeill Whistler's (1834-1903) account of his dispute with fellow artist Sir William Eden (1849-1915). In 1894 Whistler painted the portrait of Lady Eden, for which her husband offered £100. Whistler accepted the payment, exhibited the painting, yet refused to deliver it. Eden instigated legal proceedings and subsequently recovered the funds. Whistler was ordered to hand over the portrait at the civil tribune in 1895, although ultimately, following two appeals in 1897 and 1900 respectively, he was granted ownership and Eden made to pay expenses. The case entered French law by establishing that artists do not enter into ordinary commercial contracts of sale with their… Read More
