The Butterick Company produced sewing patterns used to make clothing, as well as numerous publications focused on fashion and home clothing design. The company began in 1863 with Ebenezer Butterick (1826-1903) a tailor from Sterling, Massachusetts and his wife Ellen August Pollard Butterick (1831-1871) when they invented the graded sewing pattern, which revolutionised the practice of home sewing. The plethora of available patterns represented in this catalogue include designs for ladies' cloaks, basques, over-skirts, corset-covers, and gored wrappers. . Quarto.

An early edition of five parts of the popular Early Lessons series of stories for children, which consisted of nine separate pieces, first published in 1801 by Irish novelist and educational writer Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) who was inspired to publish the more succcessful stories composed for her numerous younger siblings. Wrapper is smoke-stained and shelf-worn with no losses. Edges a little bumped, internally bright and clean. From the estate of Olwyn Hughes, recently dispersed, without indication of such; the smoke damage is the result of an errant cigarette dropped by Olwyn down the back of her settee, which caused a serious fire. A family copy of an atmospheric novel following the Templemore family from England to Bengal in the final days of East India Company rule - when 'the first faint mutterings of the storm which was to dash the crazy fabric of British power' were stirring - by Charles Philip Austin Oman (1825-76). Diversions, full of details of Anglo-Indian social custom, include hunting alligators and boar, visits to the Calcutta Botanical Gardens, 'a picnic in the Himalayahs' and 'Indian Jugglers'. A rare survival, in crisp original state, of a primer designed to instruct a juvenile readership in basic numeracy and reading comprehension. The Yorkshire Joint Stock Publishing and Stationery Company, who issued the work, purchased the premises of Otley-based printer Webb Millington in 1863. Their publications, predominantly chapbooks, toy books, and pictorial lessons, commonly used Webb Millington's old 'stock-blocks'. This re-use of texts, woodcuts, and engravings by make dating uncertain. The company does not appear to have survived beyond 1875. In 1894 Whistler painted the portrait of Lady Eden, for which her husband offered £100. Whistler accepted the payment, exhibited the painting, yet refused to deliver it. Eden instigated legal proceedings and subsequently recovered the funds.
