This is NOT a modern reprint; c. 1885 w/ no note of further printings; 231 pgs. + 14 pgs. adverts. + 7 fold-out plates/ diagrams at back; 7.5 x 5.5"". Navy blue cloth binding tight & square; minor rubbing, trace of soil, convex bow to covers, 1/4"" corner bumps at top of each cover. Gold gilt vignette on front & all gold spine lettering crisp & intact. No fray or spine discolor. Text block tight to binding; narrow spine gap prior to title page (not really a split- minor). Neatly penned sm. owner name, dated Dec. 25, '88 w/ ""Univ. of Pa"" in top corner of title page- assume 1888- in fountain pen & looks old. Text is tight, clean, unmarked w/ v. light toning. All plates intact & complete- bit of edge wear, but no tears. NOT ex library. Handsome, well preserved copy- displays well.

Stiff card silkscreen ""dust jacket"" w/ abstract color wave motif is bright & clean w/ little to no wear. NO chips, tears, scuffs or sun discolor. Copy displays very well. Small, 7 x 4"", 248 pages, illus w/ tipped- in miniature (approx. 3"" x 3""- varies) b/w plates & 1 fold out 3 pg. plate, all present & complete. Tan cloth binding w/ silhouette profile of Goethe & ruled borders on front shows some soil, rubbing- not severe. Outward vert. bow to front cover- does not really detract. All lettering & decoration intact & legible- copy actually displays pretty well. Lightest toning to text; tight, unmarked. NO hinge splits, NOT ex library. Nice little copy.

Could NOT find this edition on any online bibliography for this title. Apparent First Edition Thus- dated 1940, no note of further printings; 619 pages, 9 x 5"", rough-cut side edge of text block. Full red leather(ette?) covers are tight, glossy, clean & square w/ minor toning along cover edges. No bumps, rubs or frays. Red spine w/ gold decoration, faux ridges & black title boxing shows a little rubbing. 1"" x 1"" piece (NOT affecting title) cleanly separated from top front of panel of spine. This piece is present & in good shape. I assume this could be easily stabilized/ repaired (but not by me). Endpapers (red) & text are tight, clean, unmarked. NO hinge splits, owner names, etc.; NOT ex library. Red slipcase shows some rubbing, edge wear, toning; top panel cleanly separated, but still present and included; rest is tight.

Brown cloth binding shows a corner bump top front, rubbing, soil; spine sunfaded- no legible printing. All gold lettering on cover crisp & intact. Still displays well- esp. front cover. Old owner name in fountain pen in corner of front fixed endpaper. Text & endpapers only v. lightly toned; tight, square copy. No marks seen in text; rear endpaper has old list of compounds in pencil- very light. NO hinge splits, NOT ex library. A nice representative copy (esp. interesting is section on deciphering doctors' handwriting on prescriptions).

Pebble grain ivory board binding glossy. tight & square; pretty minor soil, rubbing & spine discolor- esp. for this edition. Green lettering & decoration (w/ stylized woman's head) intact & legible. Book still displays well. Light green endpapers bright & clean; remains of small old owner name/ address label in corner of front free endpaper- minor.
