Description:
Petrograd, 1923. Very good. Single sheet of heavy wove paper 13 by 18 inches with blue, red, green and gold calligraphy congratulating the circus orchestral director on twenty years of service. Addressed to Dear Colleague Stanislav Martinovich Novitsky from the Guild (Collective) of Circus Workers, and signed by what appears to be all of the performers and workers of the circus. The St. Petersburg Circus was founded by an Italian immigrant, Gaetano Cinzelli (Chinzelli) in 1877. Even though Cinzelli died in 1881, his family continued to manage the circus until the October Revolution of 1917. It is still performing today. We are unable to decipher the names of the performers, except for one, which appears on the left margin near the bottom: G. Chinzelli, probably a grandson, possibly the son, of the founder. There are three horizontal folds in the certificate, a little roughness around the edges, and some light soil and offsetting from the gold, but this is a very good example of…

Ni soi judio, ni vengo de judaizantes" (I write this history dispassionately and without craft, as concerning things that do not touch me. I am not a Jew, nor am I of Jewish descent.) London: Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1824. Hardcover. Very good. This is the second edition of Warton, considerably enlarged and annotated by Richard Price. 4 volumes, 8vo. Contemporary hald red leather, spines in six compartments, gilt titles, marbled sides and endpapers in a stone pattern. Top edges gilt. The leather is rubbed, worn at the edges and corners, and unevenly sunned, but still very good textblocks in a good and pleasant binding. An academically noteworthy edition of Warton's worn, because the editor, Richard Price, makes the first mention of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight then recently discovered in the Cotton Nero manuscript. IN addition, this edition contains a significant number of Arthurian Romances, also discussed by Price in his substantial Preface, his three Dissertations, and in his copious Notes.
