France, early 18th century. 7 volumes, in folio and quarto. Manuscripts on paper, in French. Written in several hands over four decades, all hands are closely written, filling every page, in a neat secretarial script in brown ink and under calligraphic titles giving the addressee and date of letter. Collection contains full transcriptions of letters received from the French Calvary regiments, namely the Royal Carabiniers and the Régiment du Maine, the principal French military regiments active at the turn of the 18th century. The earliest letter is dated 1696 and the latest 1740. Addressed for the most part to various commanders of the brigades, French statesmen, or members of the court mainly in Versailles, Marly and Fountainebleau; with some near-contemporary marginal annotations, summaries and corrections. Library records indicate a publication date of 1915, and locate 5 copies worldwide. Bindings just a bit shelf-worn overall, with some fading to the spine lettering and light chipping at the corners. One instance of marginalia -- a previous owner's careful attempt at a stenography lesson, in purple ink. A handsome set. And uncommon.

Black, white, red, and gilt decorative Christmas paper over boards; 185 x 273 mm; pp. [83], handwritten in ink, with more than 20 drawings and watercolors, including vignettes, decorative flourishes, and full-page scenes. A florid, orderly, feminine hands records a very personal account of her childhood memories and family history, composed in hindsight, and lamenting "the present world... [of] H. Bombs, Nuclear Tests, Atomic Secrets, Radioactivity, planes hurling through the air with deafening noise... The levity of my sketch, Wordsorth, forgive, for, like you, 'Have I not reason to lament what man has made of man?'" She also references "peace time," making it clear that she has some familiarity with war, and this is perhaps why the entire volume is a careful balancing act between a retreat to the past (told cheerfully, as though to a child) and a more somber rumination on her present. 1890. Hardcover. Very Good+. Business ledger of Dr. Worthington Pinney, a dentist practicing in Newark, New Jersey, in the 1880-90s. He was President of the New Jersey State Dental Society in 1886. Cloth-covered boards, gilt-lettered black leather label on spine, paper label on cover; pp. 641, 414 of which contain tidy handwritten records of dentist's patients. Just a little soiled and scuffed; text block bright, tight, clean. Records indicate the patient's name, the date and work done, and the costs charged and received. Poor Mr. Miller, for example, shows thirty procedures from 1882 to 1890, accruing nearly $200 in fees for extractions and gold fillings. Though the entries themselves are neat and methodical, they are not arranged in any discernible order, leaving one to wonder how the book-keeper managed to find the patient's record and keep it current.
