Description:
xvi+388 pages with 2 maps, 21 figures, 29 tables, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") issued in red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. 1st edition. The Countryside near Guadalajara underwent great change in the eighteenth century, for that city, dependent on the surrounding area for food and other resources, grew six fold in those one hundred years. This book examines the period 1675-1820, showing how the haciendas near Guadalajara responded to a rapidly escalating demand for meat, maize, wheat, and other necessities. By studying how agricultural production, patterns of capital investment, the labor system, and land ownership and use changed to meet the city's increasing needs, Van Young demonstrates the vital role cities play in the modernization of traditional peasant societies. Unlike in Europe, the great rural estates of Mexico intensified but did not otherwise change their methods of agricultural technology. By increasing capital investment, paying more workers less money, and… Read More

79 pages with tables, diagrams and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's yellow wrappers. Translated by A J Swift. Rare and Unpublished Tournaments and Matches number 30. First edition. The Hague event was held concurrently with the Games of the 9th Summer Olympiad. As FIDE congress in 1927 bowed under the tension of British delegates and decided to allow only amateurs to take part most world top players ignored the competition, weakening its strength and prestige. Same as in 1924 there was an individual competition, called the Amateur World Championship, and team tourney, this time held as a separate event. Unlike in 1924 both events were split and no results from individual tournament counted for overall team score. Each team was allowed to put one representative in the A.W.Ch. and anyone but Belgium and Denmark did that. Most teams lent their top players in the event but it was not a rule. Steiner, Euwe and Matisons were considered the favourites and Carls, Treybal and… Read More

2 parts: xiv+78 pages with 426 plates; 8 unpaginated pages and 13 plates. Royal octavo (9 14" x 6 1/8") issued in wrappers with black and gilt lettering. First edition.Robert Woods Bliss was the earliest of the serious collectors of Pre-Columbian art. In 1945, he wrote to the secretary of his Harvard class:About forty years ago [closer to thirty years, in fact] I became interested in the sculpture and artifacts in general of the various pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico, Central America, and the west coast of South America. At that time few, if any of our art museums had on display these objects, which were only made available to the public in museums of natural history as part of their archaeological finds. To me, many of the pieces I saw had artistic significance and also revealed remarkable craftsmanship. So I began to collect, buying only pieces which appealed to me as objects of art . . . I began to try to impress upon others the importance of the history of art, of the stylized and powerful… Read More
