Description:
Durham: Printed for the Author, by J. Ross, 1736. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 146 x 81 mms., pp. x, 211 [212 Errata and adverts], attractively bound in late 19th century full red morocco, double gilt rule on covers, gilt rules between raised bands on spine, black morocco label, all edges gilt; first leaf repaired with loss of words on verso, a little browning and waterstaining of text, some margins closely trimmed, joints rubbed, but a very good and attractive copy. The adverts on the verso of the last leaf are for other books by Nelson, including The Use of Human Reason in Religion in Answer to the Methodists, published in 1741, suggesting that this leaf has been reset. ESTC T138951 records three copies of this first edition: BL, Bodleian, Newcastle Central. A later edition with a cancel title-page removes Ross as author, published in 1738 (Bodleian [2]), UCLA.

Cambridge, Printed by J. Bentham...and Sold...by W. Thurlbourn..., 1749. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. xv [xvi contents], 292 [293 - 303 Index, 304 Corrections & Additions, 305 advert, 306 blank], 25 folding engraved plates, additional printed tables inserted between pp. 174 - 15, 182 - 183 (folding), and 238 - 239, recently rebound in quarter straight-grain morocco, gilt spine, morocco labels. A very good copy. Smith (1689 - 1768) trained as a mathematician and was Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge for forty-four years (1716 - 1760). Although his work on harmonics has a mathematical basis, he approaches the problems of tuning keyboard instruments as a musician would. Commenting on the book some thirty-five years later, another commentator on the aesthetics of music, Thomas Robertson (d. 1799), author of An Inquiry into the Fine Arts, called it "a work of ingenuity, as well as of great labour"; but, damning with faint praise, he added, "but who ventures to peruse it?…

London: Printed for William Strahan, Richard Baldwin, WIlliam Johnston, Thomas Longman, and Robrt Horsfield. 1763. 2 volumes. 4to, 261 x 200 mms., pp. [v] vi - xvi, 316, 167 [168 blank]; [165 - 167] 168 - 672 [673 - 692 Index, 693 - 696 table and errata], engraved frontispiece in volume 1, contemporary calf, gilt border on covers, red morocco labels; some wear to extremities, joints slightly strained, but a very good set. The Biblical scholar James Macknight (1721 - 1800) began his research for this book when he was a student, and the first edition was published in 1756. An able scholar, he was apparently not much of a preacher. Edward Bannerman Ramsay, in his Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character records this anecdote: "On one occasion when coming to church, Dr. Macknight had been caught in a shower of rain, and entered the vestry soaked with wet. Every means were used to relieve him of his discomfort; but as the time drew on for divine service he became much distressed, and…

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 159 x 97 mms., pp. [5] 6 - 119 [120 blank], including list of subscribers, contemporary half calf, marbled boards, title in gilt on spine; extremities rubbed and spine darkened, but a very good copy, with a contemporary autograph "Robert Roberts" on the front paste-down end-paper, and what looks like "Haverhill/ March 1877" on the recto of the front free end-paper. John Webb (1768 - 1840) was a weaver by trade, but also a frequent contributor to The Lady's Magazine. Koenraad Claes in an online article has this assessment of the weaver's career: "One reader-contributor who achieved moderate success within the magazine was the Suffolk-based "weaver poet" John Webb (1768-1840). Thanks to a few preserved personal documents we know more about him than about most other authors. Webb was an exceptionally productive contributor, publishing dozens of poems and causeries…

Description:
London, Printed for D. Davis..., 1732. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo, 212 x 135 mms., pp. vi, [20], 311 [312 note], title-page in red and black, engraved frontispiece, uncut, late 18th century calf, sympathetically rebacked, morocco label; a very good copy with the inscription "Jas. Bonar/ 1791" on the top margin of the title-page, and the 20th century bookplate of Ray Livingstone Murphy on the front paste-down end-paper. Voltaire dedicated this long poem on the life of the French King, Henri IV to Queen Caroline, and it was published in French in 1728. It was translated into English by John Lockman (1698 - 1771), and this apparently earned him the sobriquet "l'illustre Lockman" in France, a fact that Dr. Johnson, according to Boswell, found irritating and ridiculous. The translation, in blank verse, is accompanied by a large number of notes, almost all of an anti-Catholic hue. Foxon L 215.

The coloured images seem to me not dissimilar to the style of Thomas Stothard, but it seems more likely that they derive from drawings or paintings by Burney. The playwright and novelist Richard Cumberland (17321811) was the author of the very popular novel, Arundel, first published in 1789 and frequently reprinted. Henry…

Loutherbourg) and two other engraved plates (by Stallard and Sanders), contemporary half calf, gilt spine, red morocco label, marbled boards (very slightly soiled); two plates closely cropped at lower margin, probably removing "Published as the act directs" information, joints a little creased, but a very good copy. Brian Hill (1755 or 1756 - 1831) published this first in, probably, 1786, though it was written in 1783.
