aquatint, RARE, beautiful early view of Mahé from 'Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de La Corvette de Sa Majesté La Favorite exécuté pendant les années 1830, 1831, 1832, pl. 10, sketched by Francois-Edmond Paris, engraved by Sigismond Himely and under the direction of Louis Auguste de Sainson with Arthus Bertrand, editeur. "La Favorite" was one of several ships sent out by the France in the 1820/1830s to compete with similar expeditions by other countries. These were voyages with political/territorial objectives via commercial diplomatic, scientific and artistic means, intending to expand French influence particularly in Southeast Asia to counter British interests. Barthelemy Lauvergne (1805-1871) was a French painter, maritime, and landscape artist active in the mid 19th C. The main intention of the voyage was: to extend French influence in Indochina, but Manila, Sydney and Rio de la Plata areas were also visited and documented. Francisco X. Baranera S. J, a professor at Ateneo Municipal, and originally published in 1892. With An Historical Sketch by Alexander Laist. This famous and collectible guidebook includes sections on Philippine history as well as detailed descriptions of the provinces by island group. chromolithograph. Botanical print from 'L'Illustration Horticole'.It aimed educate people about the fascinating plants being gathered from around the world and hopefully persuade them to buy from the associated plant nurseries. The driving forces behind it were Charles Lemaire, a professor of botany, Ambroise Verschaffelt of the Nursery Verschaffelt and the Linden family, renowned Belgian horticulturists. The prints were illustrated by some of the best botanical artists of the day, such as Goosens, De Pannemaeker and Stroobant. Many are enhanced by delicate shellac finishing. original hand-colour lithograph, heightened with albumen. Ornithological print from 'The Exploration of Kina Balu, North Borneo'; plate 182. First edition, the plates were lithographed by the author from his own water-colour sketches. The hand-coloured plates depict insects, mammals and birds, some of the latter in the style of Keulemans. The authour, an ornithologist, spent four years in North Borneo, Java, Palawan and the state of Malacca. He brought back specimens of manynew animals including 45 species of birds.
