Description:
Fourteen 3.5" x 5" snapshots of a circa 1940s hair salon. They show that same stylist with a few different customers, including a man. In some of the photos, it looks like she is giving the client a perm. Different images of hairstyles adorn the pine walls of this classy joint, which is unidentified. A few have some light staining along the edges and a couple have light creases. A wonderful look at a Hair Salon from years ago.

Description:
There are over 60 photos in this collection of the permanent wave hairstyle, very common from the 1970s and 80s. The permanent wave, commonly known as the perm, was a hairstyle consisting of curls or waves set into the hair which would last for months. These photos appear to be from the early 1980s and most measure about 8" x 10" with a few smaller pics. Many are marked-up Press photos and some of the Hair Style companies and Salons included in the photo include the Ogilvie Home Perm, Don Shaw Hairdressers, The Wella Corporation, Clairol, Allen Edwards Salons, Gil Ferrer Salon, Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell, Bumble and Bumble, etc. Being a woman of a certain age, I can smell those home perms just by writing about them! The photos are in overall good condition.

Description:
49 leaves/98 pages, grey paper, one leaf detached. Only the first 21 pages are used for photographs, 4 or 5 per page; an additional six are tucked in. The last 38 leaves are blank. This album documents the life of a family in southern Maine - mostly Orland; other towns mentioned include Bucksport, Northport, Castine, and Newport, NH; locations visited include Duck Cove, Fort Knox and Fort Point. It is possible the photographs were taken during one particular vacation to the region. The photos alternate between natural sites and portraits of family members/friends. The dress is generally formal or upper-class, men in boaters and waistcoats with pocket watches, women with parasols, in gowns and fascinators. Some of the photographs are of the children of the Marks Family, proprietors of a local grocery and confectionery shop (its roadside sign is pictured in the background). Other portraits generally utilize first names or nicknames. The Dorr Family is also important and quite possibly that of the… Read More

Description:
There are twenty-seven beautifully drawn and funny pages in this 9.25" x 12.5" Czech collage and cartoon album, given to a Mr. Jan Dřímal from his coworkers in August, 1948. The album is done in pen and colored inks, with a very steady hand and lovely eye for detail as well as a good grasp of comic cartoon stylings and poses. The title page is a beautiful bouquet of flowers with lovely lettering on top, introducing the book for Mr. Jan. The following page appears to be an homage to the recipient, with a photo of presumably Mr. Jan (with a stamp-type wreathe inked with his initials JD in the bottom right corner) hovering over a wonderful drawing of sewing machines. The third page appears to introduce the setting - buildings poking out from a forested hillside, perhaps the factory town? The caption of this page, google translated, reads: "Your glorious day today will be fulfilled by good wishes and good wishes and dedicated to the flowers of glory. Let everybody enjoy the time of joy and happiness,… Read More

Description:
There are over 80 hand cut silhouettes in three separate albums, including two softcover notebooks and a collection of loose, hole-punched pages. All of the silhouettes are cut out from black paper. The 2 softcover albums measure 6.25 x 9.25" and both say "Clippings" with a picture of scissors in gold on the front covers; one book is white while the other is dark brown. The white album contains around 40 silhouettes, mostly in profile, accompanied by the name of the sitter in the form of their signature and sometimes the date and location. Most of the silhouettes seem to be from 1930 to 1933. In the brown album, there are around 25 silhouettes in full-length body poses, such as sitting or standing. Clearly the artist has taken great care to add details to their models, and in many cases the silhouettes have been embellished with drawn-in clothing and hair details. This album is not completely full and there are several loose silhouettes, and many do not have annotations. The 7 loose pages contain… Read More

Early 1900s gang of friends This collection contains 2 paper albums bound with ribbon which contains pictures and poems describing the fun had by a group of young women and men in 1905 and 1906. A newspaper clipping at the back of one of the albums helpfully names many of the people photographed: "The following party went down river Tuesday for a weeks outing and will stop at the Carleton bungalow and M. E. Webber's cottage: Miss Alice Oliver chaperone, Misses Lizzie Tobey, Hattie Russell, Ella Roney, Nettie Sampson, Maude Beverage, Celia Roney, Ella Hastings, Edith Russell, Jessie Stewart; Messrs. Henry Grindle, Orra Roney, Fred Russell, Arthur Pratt, Cleveland Sampson. It is understood that they have a chef from Waldoboro-Astoria." The first album measures 8 x 5.5" and is tied with a white ribbon, while the second album measures 9.25 x 6.25" and is tied with a red ribbon. On the front cover of the first album there is a circular cyanotype of a small boat on the water, and the words "Cushing, Me.… Read More

Description:
A collection of just under 100 handwritten letters written between 1860 to 1898. Many of the letters are still folded within the small envelopes that they were sent in. Some have had their stamps cut out, and some letters are without envelopes and there are some empty envelopes. Most of the letters are written to Eliza A. Peckham (later Eliza Spooner) in Middletown, Rhode Island and are from her cousin, Julia, in Lebanon, Connecticut. There are also letters to John H. Spooner from his uncle, S.C. Spooner. The letters discuss family news such as marriages and births, the war, fashions, and daily life. The collection includes two brown leather-bound ledger books measuring 4 x 5" and 4 x 6" which contain financial records from 1896 to 1898. Inside the front cover of one of the books it says "Spooner Bros. Account Book". There is also some ephemera, including a part of a card game. I have not read all of the letters, but enough to get a sense of what is happening. Some of the writing overlaps,… Read More

Description:
Manila folder upon which is written "Love letters written by Winslow Russell to Eva Bullock Russell + Family (1900-1928). Traveled for Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company." The folder contains around 38 letters written between members of the family, although most are from Winslow to his wife and children. A majority of the letters are written on stationery that Winslow got during his travels, as they contain letterheads for several different hotels. Throughout the letters, it is clear how much Winslow loved and missed his family during his travel. Likewise, the letters from family members to Winslow show just how much love there was in this family. Most of the letters are in good shape; some have been laminated, taped up, or stuck to adhesive pages, and there are some sticky pages. They appear to have been removed from an album at some point. There are 2 black and white photos in the folder, measuring 7 x 5" and 10 x 8" respectively: one features a kitten, while the other is a copy of a photo from… Read More

Description:
A large (11" w X 16" h X 1 3/4" d), heavy (6 lb., 8 oz.) thick (300-page) tome, this is actually an old-fashioned ledger book (Wilson-Jones Account Book, Model S287) which was utilized as a personal journal. This was kept by one T. Raymond Lewis, who was awarded a plaque, in April of 1964, for 25 years of service by the American Society of Metals - one of fourteen to be so honored that evening. In the included newspaper clipping about the celebration, Lewis is described as a "heat-treating supervisor in the Inert Components Division of Picatinny Arsenal" in Dover, New Jersey. The article goes on to explain that Lewis "has been employed by the Federal Government for 33 years". The letter of invitation is also among the documents kept within the journal (none of which are taped or pasted in). Beginning in September 1944 (starting with intricate notes on the construction of small-arms bullets, and a few pages of entertaining notes on aboriginal anthropology) and for long periods during the next… Read More

Description:
A gorgeous 7.5 x 10" hardcover book with a marble patterned front and back cover with black corners and spine. The front cover and first few pages are detached. The book contains the original poems of Henrietta Lighthipe, who, according to the penciled in dates on the first page, was born on January 14, 1817 and died February 17, 1858. Another penciled in note says "Grandmother - Henrietta Ingraham." According to an internet search, she was married to Lewis Condit Lighthipe, and probably lived in the New Jersey/New York City area. In beautiful handwriting, Henrietta wrote many poems about friendship, love, loss, death, religion, and her youth. Some of her poems are written in imitation of other poets like Lord Byron, which Henrietta notes. She helpfully dates most of her poems with the month and year in which they were written. Around the middle of the book, Henrietta's handwriting changes. Each page in the book is numbered, and 117 of the 257 pages contains writing. Towards the end of the written… Read More

6.75 x 8.25" composition notebook with a blue cover and brown spine, and a space on the front for Gertrude to write her name and address, which was 330 John Street in Bridgeport, CT. There are a few empty pages, but for the most part the notebook is filled with Gertrude's writing. She has copied down such texts as "Literary Fashions" by Bliss Penny from 1906, "Idealism in American Life" by Hamilton Malre, and "Beauty in Common Things" by Henry Turner Bailey, amongst others. Gertrude also included sketches, history notes, and information on weaving, paper cutting, mounting, and seems to have copied down a play or poem. Starting from the back of the notebook, written upside down, Gertrude copied down text on "Knowledge" and "Action." Example entry: Excerpt of Literary Fashions by Bliss Penny, Feb. 10, 1906 Personal sympathies and antipathies. First looks [illegible] [illegible]. "The Count of Napoleon." Description:
6 x 9" top spiral notepad from National Blank Book Co. filled with love letters. The love letters are written from Jim to Kelly, who seem to be a couple about to get married, from November 1976 to February 1977. Some of the letters have prompts, such as how Jim feels about buying a house with Kelly, what makes her sexy, how he feels when she gets her period, and their experiences playing racquetball together. The letters offer a fascinating and often touching glimpse into a small period of time in the life of this couple. Jim's love for Kelly is clear throughout the carefully handwritten letters. The notepad is partially filled with neat handwriting on the front and back of about half of the pages. A few examples of the notes include: What do I like about you. HDTMMF 12-2-76 Hello you - Today has been a good day. I think we're going to the Gaslight tonight and feel very bad that you won't be there with me. Description:
5.5" x 12" notebook with 154 handwritten pages that appear to be a Nurses log from a hospital ward in New Jersey. The dealer I bought this from told me that he thought it was from Overbrook Asylum in Essex County, NJ, and he has written that in pencil on the inside cover. The log dates from December 18, 1956 to May 6, 1957. Most of the patients appear to have mental disorders, but this ward appears to be for physical conditions as well as mental disorientation. There are many mentions of patients expiring, and notes on patient condition including temperament, temperature, and various maladies. The writing belongs to more than one person in the diary, and was probably made by various nurses on duty. All the pages are used and it is legible and in overall condition. Some examples of the entries are below. The initials replace a person's name. A.H. His housekeeper visited him early Saturday and again on Sunday. On Saturday afternoon, she was even tempered when she informed his physician that his… Read More

8.5" x 13" paper bound book with over 100 pages, entirely filled with math notes by Samuel Jones, from 1834-1840. An added note in the front of the book reads: "Samuel Jones (my great grandfather) - Mathematics work book - July 1, 1834 to March 6, 1840, age 11 years to 17 years. note: He wrote the name "Mary Prall" on the side of the page dated Oct. 12, 1834. He was then 11 1/2 years old, she 5 years, 8 months. They were married Jan. 15, 1851." I don't see a place mentioned in the book, but a search of their names bring up that they are buried in Hazen Cemetery in Warren County, New Jersey. Sections include: Subtraction & Division, Simple Reduction, Compound Addition, Compound Subtraction, Double Rule of Three, etc. A few of the pages are loose, the spine is very worn and there is some damp staining to some pages.

Description:
This 11 1/2" x 7 1/2" album was a Christmas gift to Helen, from Laura in the year 1922. A number of photographs were made before 1922, but most of the pages - at the time - were blank, waiting to be filled with memories, and Helen did. 58 leaves/ 115 pages, 340 photographs. Photographs vary in size, most range 2 1/2" x 4 1/4" and 3 1/4" x 2 1/4". Images are contained in corner tabs and glued to the page. A couple of news clippings, mention Miss Helen Walper - "of East Mine Street [Harrisburg, Pennsylvania], a stenographer for the Hooven Mercantile Co." and her vacations of note. Helen Walper had an unmistakable love for the water, and unwavering appreciation for her family and friends. Throughout, are photographs documenting travels to Lake Nuangola, along the Susquehanna River, the Hudson River, Niagara Falls, Lake Ontario, Rockaway Beach, Ocean Beach, Bear Mountain. She can be seen paddling a canoe, picking sea shells by the sea shore, splashing in the ocean, and standing on the boardwalk.… Read More

Description:
This fantastically fun photo album belonged to a sailor from Long Island, New York, and showcases his time in the South Pacific. The album measures 8.25" x 11.5" with a suede and cloth backed snap-closure cover, with 220 black and white photos of various sizes within. The suede cover is hand-painted and stamped with an image of a ship and says "USS Beaver, Submarine Tender." You can practically smell the salty air and feel the island breeze as you enter this album, full of shots of life in Hawaii, on Midway Island and a few real photo postcards that I believe are from Panama. Several have wonderful captions written on the image and many are identified on the back. There are 20 photos from the Maui Fair in 1938, as well as pics of turtles, close encounters with seabirds, hiking on the island, fun on the beach, hula girls, a shark, a Naval submarine fleet, photos on board and from the shore of ships and crews, of fishing, and portraits of sailors enjoying island life. Some photos are put in so that… Read More
