[24], "272" [=274], [8] pp.First and only edition of the unauthorized Dutch translation of the official pharmacopoeia of the municipality of The Hague in the Netherlands, first published in Latin by Johannes Tongerlo in 1658 as Pharmacopoea Hagiensis. The index lists about 500 medicines. In some cases the text simply gives the name of the medicine with a reference to a published source, in others it gives a full recipe with the ingredients and instructions for their preparation.Johannes de Cros published the translation without consent of the Collegium Medicorum of The Hague. This lead to a heated argument and De Cros would later add a postscript (8 pp.), as included in the present copy, explaining his side of the story. [4], 24 pp.First and only edition of a series of illustrations of the decorations displayed during the inauguration of William IV, Prince of Orange, who in 1747 became the Stadtholder of all the United Provinces and general and admiral of the Dutch army and navy.Around 1740 the Dutch Republic got involved in the War of the Austrian Succession, which lead to the occupation of States' Flanders (the northern part of Flanders, part of the Dutch Republic since the Eighty Years' War) by the French in 1747. This caused an enormous unrest in the Republic as this fully exposed the weakness of the Dutch defences, leading to a strong wish for restoration of the stadtholderate. When this was restored by the inauguration of William IV, it brought an end to the Second Stadtholderless Period (1702-1747). 48 pp.Very rare narrative of the loss of the English East Indiaman Fattysalam off the coast of Coromandel on 28 August 1761. It was written by the French counsellor, man of letters and employee at the Royal library of King Louis XV, Anne-Gabriel Meusnier de Querlon (1702-1780), Comte de Kearny, and the book refers to him simply as De Kearny.The Fattysalam had been built at Bombay, and had never been employed in the Indian seas. She was intended to carry great part of the stores taken by the English, and near 500 troops, which it had been thought fit to send to Bengal, because after the regiment of Pondicherry, they were not wanted on that coast...'' (Duncan).Kearny was one out of 12 who had escaped from the ship, which had been lost, together with most of the crew. Approximately 1600 pp.Huge volume containing an important collection of articles and papers on fish and especially eels, by the Danish biologist Ernst Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933), probably all his papers published in this period. Schmidt is best known for his findings on the migration patterns and breeding places of the eel, which he researched during various Danish expeditions in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. He also, accidently, caught the first leptocephalus larva outside the Mediterranean Sea, which are also discussed in many of the papers. The book opens with a general title-page Havundersøgelser (Ocean studies), followed by a portrait, a letter and all the articles. Most of them are written in English, although a few are in Danish, German or French. Discussed in the articles are eels and their larvae, cod, halibut, sun-fishes and other fish, and one deals with various turtle species in the Danish West Indies. Robert Coupland Harding (1849-1916), "New Zealand's first and most eminent typographer" (McKenzie), printed these almanacs for the years 1883 to 1890 and 1892, so presumably also the separate leaves of prayers, as the catalogue of the Alexander Turnbull Library suggests. The present one opens with a quotation from Luke 11:1 and an introductory paragraph, followed by the title in capitals, which translates as "A prayer for the children". Although the pamphlet was printed by the press that the author established, he had largely turned it over to others in 1840. Although he and the publisher Moses Cohen Belinfante were members of the (sephardic) Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam, the book was also intended for the "German" (ashkenazic) community, sometimes noting differences in pronunciation between the two groups. Although the main text is in Dutch, the pages progress from right to left as in a Hebrew book. Sommerhaussen chose to publish the book in two parts. The first part contains three numbered sections, introducing the alphabet, with the name, pronunciation and associated number of each letter; explains the vowel points; and provides spelling exercises with words of one syllable. He had studied at Padova, then the most advanced university for medicine, and became town physician and Lector in Surgery at his native Dordrecht. Beautifully engraved and hand-coloured celestial chart by the Nuremberg astronomer and professor of mathematics Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750). In the beginning of the 18th-century Doppelmayr worked closely with the cartographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724). Together, they produced a number of atlases including the famous Atlas coelestis (1742), a collection of diagrams with explanations intended as an introduction to the fundamentals of astronomy."This map of the northern hemisphere sky includes the Ptolemaic constellations and a number of the newly-designed ones. The eight northern hemisphere constellations, introduced by Johannes Hevelius in the previous century, are depicted. Engraved portrait of the Arminian preacher Hendrick Danielsz. Slatius (1585-1623), wearing handcuffs and the clothes of a farmer. Slatius was arrested (and later executed) as one of the conspirators in the failed attempt to assassinate Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623. The print was issued with either Dutch or French poems at the left.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. [26] ll., the 2 folio ll. folded in half.A collection of original samples of 23 varieties of mushroom, mounted on paper leaves or bifolia and dried, with manuscript notes providing information about the samples and with an occasional pencil drawing. Most give the name of the mushroom (in Latin or French) and the date and/or place where it was collected. Most were collected in or around Paris or within a few hours travel of Paris. The earliest two, both dated 19 October 1862, give much more detailed information written on a pre-printed (lithographed?) form in script lettering. On the front paste-down is a letterpress label with name and address, "F. Bertillon|3, Rue d'Achères|Maison-Laffitte", the name repeated in a similar label on the front board. This may be François Bertillon (b. 1889), the grandson of the Paris mycologist Louis-Adolphe Bertillon (1821-1883), whose family had a residence at Maison-Laffitte, outside Paris. As he states in the preface, Delathauwer wished to create a herbal in the Dutch language, as an addition to the many French works. It opens with a preface and introduction, followed by a general chapter covering all the different components of a plant. Next is a section on gardening and classification of plants and herbs. The majority of the work consists of descriptions of herbs, arranged alphabetically, mentioning the plant's habitat, characteristics and special properties if there are any. Each volume closes with an index for that volume. The fourth volume also contains a chapter on plant cultivation, plant diseases and pesticides. With a collector's label on title-page. The work includes a description of the Amsterdam Riots and is dedicated by the printer to the city council of Enkhuizen and by the author to the council of Amsterdam. The fine, anonymous plates vividly illustrate the persecution and subsequent execution of the Annabaptists. The plate on leaf 3 is erroneously repeated on leaf 5; in later states this error has been corrected.With the bookplate and owner's inscription.
