An abridged translation from Brillat-Savarin's "Physiologie du Gout", keeping the same basic order, chapter titles, etc. but with the emphasis on ". . . the Cure of Leanness and Reduction of Corpulency rather than to the art of giving dinners." (Bitting page 437 for 1859 London edition).

New York: Boni and Liveright, (1923). First edition. Hardcover. Some soiling to spine, corners rubbed, endpapers toned, else about very good in moderately worn dustjacket. (58) pp., 12mo, orange cloth and decorative boards, dustjacket. Tipped to jacket front flap is a typed letter on Gelett Burgess' stationary dated April 25th, 1923 signed by the author: "My dear Marthe; So glad to hear a word from you but why so brief? So glad, too, you liked my 'Educated Heart.' If you want a laugh, read the American Magazine this month (May issue) and if you want to know what kind of a girl I married, get McClure's for March and read 'Eleanor, the Second Hand' by Estelle Loomis. / P.G. appeared here - - disappeared, I know not where or why. I am wondering about you. What has time done to you? Yours always, [signed] Gelette." Regarding those named in the letter, Marthe appeantly was an old friend. Estelle Loomis was Burgess' wife. Could "P.G." refer to P.G. Wodehouse?

Primary focus is more on positive thinking than food, but the last section of the book is "How to Eat Healthfully." Not in Bitting.

London: Mills & Boon, [1918]. First edition. Moderate rubbing to covers, contemporary previous owner name mostly effaced from front fixed endpaper, else about very good. Rebound in olive green cloth stamped in black with "Ex Libris WHS" (i.e., WH Smith) monogram near bottom of front cover; 292 pp. Text includes the poem "Back to Back Against the Mainmast" by George Sterling (on pp. xi-xii) - this was omitted from the US edition. This true first edition of this title, undated, but with 27 other Jack London on list facing title page. A later Mills & Boon printing added the 1920 publication "Island Tales" to the list. This UK edition precedes the US edition by 2 years. [Portland, Oregon]: Northwest Steel Co., 1918 (Jan.-Dec., twice per month). First edition. Hardcover. Good. Limp green cloth with gilt spine title, 9 x 6 inches. First 24 numbers of "Heave Together" bound with original covers into a single volume, each number with subscriber's mailing label and postage stamp on from cover. Illustrated. Large (9 x 28 inches) folding panoramic photographic frontispiece inside front cover. Minor rubbing to covers; internally about very good with a couple pages somewhat frayed at fore-edge. Panoramic frontispiece is complete, but separated into 3 pieces with wear to all folds. Semi-monthly publication of the Northwest Steel Company employee's magazine. Much of the content relates to war-time shipbuilding. The large folding photo was a special supplement to the first issue.

Edition of 39 numbered copies, this #30. Described by A. E Coppard in Schwartz & Coppard p. 57 as "a pirated edition, issued without reference to or permission from me . . . , but I daresay the MS. sheet is genuine as I sold this particular MS. to an American some years ago." From the library of John K. Martin (of Black Sparrow Press) with his small exlibris label to rear pastedown.
