Some cracking in places to the cloth of the spine, with a square flake of loss affecting the title at the head of the spine. Minor scuffing and shelfwear, light bumping to extremities, a strong and solid copy with some cosmetic problems. Internally clean, glazed brown endpapers, rather opulent altogether for a self published title. Inscribed by the author to James Lancaster Pollitt on the verso of the front flyleaf, at the American Exhibition in London in 1887 where Brown had her Norse Exhibit. The American Exhibition that year was notable for the appearance of Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show. The book is also annotated throughout in pencil, although the vagaries of late 19th century handwriting mean that the notes could be those of Brown, Pollitt, or a later owner. Inscribed to fellow author James Baldwin "to Jimmy from Toni 11.10.82". Toni Morrison and James Baldwin met when she was an editor at Random House, and she tremendously valued his work and his friendship. Morrison's eulogy for Baldwin at his funeral in December 1987 was printed in The New York Times. Author Jack Abbott spent much of his juvenile and adult life incarcerated. Due in part to the publishing of In The Belly of the Beast and the support of Norman Mailer, Abbott was paroled in 1981. However he killed a man six weeks later and returned to prison. Sixth Printing. 166 pages. 14.5 x 21.5 cm. Near fine book in very good dust jacket. This book's provenance is via the late San Francisco bookseller Burton Weiss who bought it from Baldwin's estate in St. Paul-de-Vence, France.

First Edition. 8vo. 286pp. Publisher's original tan cloth titled in gilt to the spine, in a very good, clean, and sharp example of the dustjacket, some minor edgewear, and a little spotting to the top edge and the inside flap, but essentially a near fine copy of an outstanding book. Inscribed by the author to the title page:"To Lisa - Best Wishes, Angela"The recipient is Lisa Tuttle, award winning science fiction author who very much shared Carter's desire for feminist interrogation of existing tropes, or the practice of asking "New questions of old texts", a direct quote from Tuttle, in the service of a kind of feminist revisionist mythology, the practice of which Angela Carter all but perfected in works like The Bloody Chamber, and The Magic Toyshop. A nice association in lovely condition.

The typescript, on Lenono letter head, of Yoko Ono's introduction to the book. Made up of three paragraphs, followed by the poem "Sky People". Signed in black ink by Yoko Ono at the end of the poem. this is the actual manuscript used in the production of the book, with this introduction and poem being reproduced on pages 6 and 7. Ono's signature here was the one photographed and printed in the book underneath the introduction. A unique object.
