Description:
A Limited Edition. 1 of 350 copies, numbered 000 (possibly the Artist or Publisher's copy), signed by the Artist. Large 4to (300 × 240 mm), pp. [12], 173, [1], plus 21 tipped-in colour plates, top edge gilt, remainder uncut, original gilt-decorated vellum. Published by Hodder & Stoughton (London), 1911.
Original vellum a little rubbed and lightly marked, browning to the endpapers as usual, wanting ties. A very good copy.
Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale "travelled often to the continent and was clearly influenced by the fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century art which she saw on visits to Italy. There were further exhibitions of her works at Leighton House in 1904, with a catalogue containing appreciative remarks by George Frederic Watts, and at Dowdeswell's in 1905 and 1909. She continued her illustrative work, which from about 1905 consisted of both line drawings and watercolours made for reproduction as half-tone colour plates. A Limited Edition, 1 of 250 copies, Signed 'N Mandela' to a clear area on an inserted frontispiece. Exceptionally rare thus.

Although 950 copies of this specially-bound production were originally planned, only 250 copies were ultimately produced.

Fully bound in brown morocco by the Abbey Bookbindery in Surrey, England, gilt titles blocked in black, title lettered in gilt to spine, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout, 208 pp., contained within a bespoke presentation box case; featuring a draw containing a limited edition photograph of Mandela; signed by the Photographer, Greg Bartley. Produced by Chinthurst Fine Books to celebrate the 85th birthday of Mandela in 2003.

A fine example of this beautiful production of Mandela's iconic work.

A Promotional Poster entitled "In Celebration of Maurice Sendak," portraying various famous characters created and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Characters from the following books are featured: "Kenny's Window" (1956); "The Sign on Rosie's Door" (1960); "The Nutshell Library" (1962), comprised of "Pierre," "Alligators All Around," "Chicken Soup with Rice," and "One Was Johnny"; "Where the Wild Things Are" (1963); "In the Night Kitchen" (1970); and "Outside Over There" (1981). Amongst others, the Poster depicts the following Characters; Wild Things, Max, Alligator, Rosie, The Baker, Mickey, and The Lion.
Pen Signed by the artist as "Maurice Sendak" at lower right. Also signed in stone as "Maurice Sendak / Feb. 90" at lower right.
The Poster was originally owned by an agent and friend of Maurice Sendak.

A Signed Limited Edition. Number 467 of a limited edition of 560 large-paper copies numbered and signed by the illustrator. Large quarto, original vellum, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and cover gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, dark green pictorial endpapers, ties sympathetically replaced by the bindery of George Bayntun, tipped in colour frontispiece and 23 plates mounted on green papers with printed tissue-guards, 12 tinted plates, 66 illustrations within the text. Published by J. M. Dent & Co. (London), 1907.

Some occasional minor browning, a small tear to the upper right corner of the half title page expertly and discreetly repair by the bindery of George Bayntun, front panel a little bowed. A near fine copy.

Third edition. Nine Volumes in Five. 8vo., bound in full tooled calf (240 x 145mm), engraved frontispiece, engraved plates and illustrations. Printed from Mr Hearne's corrected copy in the Bodleian Library. Printed at the Theatre; For James Fletcher, in the Turl, and Joseph Pote, at Eton College, 1770.
A little rubbing to the corners of the bindings, two small black marks to the spine of one volume, occasional minor browning. A very good copy.
These volumes have an interesting provenance containing two notable bookplates; William Garnett, Esq. (1818-1873) of Bleasdale and Quernmore Park, Co. Lancaster, and George Ormerod, LL. D, DCL, F.R.S. & F.S.A. (1785-1873) of Sedbury Park, Gloucestershire.
The Latin inscription of William Garnett's armorial bookplate reads "Diligentia et Honore". William Garnett was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Lancaster in 1857. He resigned his seat in 1864, thus becoming steward of the Manor of Northstead. (Oxford DNB.)
