101.5 x 124 cm, uncoloured lithograph, EXTREMELY RARE. Text on top of map: 'Sheet 17 and 18', [in nine charts. Chart No.9]. Large, detailed Blue-back Chart with extensive soundings, shows the Japan and Korea. Imray originally was in the stationary account book publishing business. In 1836 Imray joined with Michael Blachford, a small sea chart publisher based in London. The partnership flourished and soon began to compete with the larger firm of Norie and Wilson. In 1846 Imray bought out Blachford, taking over as sole proprietor. The firm later, led by descendants, survived into the 20th century. Condition: mounted on blue paper with original chart sticker, with water stain at lower right affecting plate, with minor edge confined on lower left margin. REFERENCE: unrecorded - not in Quirino..

copper engraving - NO verso text. EXTREMELY RARE edition map from "Asiae Nova Descriptio [Tabularum libri IV]", f. 25. Asian part from "Tabularum geographicarum contractarum libri quatuor". Second to the last edition, substantially extended edition of Barent Langenes' Caert-Thresoor, published then at Middelburg. This edition is extremely rare as only "one copy known" (per Koeman in British Museum), and has no text, I.e. all maps show a blank verso - collector's item. Condition: with some foxing along margins, barely affecting plate, with marginal water stains affecting small part of left plate. Reference: Koeman Vis 4 (= Lan 15); Shirley T.LAN-1h; Tiele 1160

aquatint, RARE beautiful view from 'Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de La Corvette de Sa Majesté La Favorite exécuté pendant les années 1830, 1831, 1832, pl. 53, sketched by Francois-Edmond Paris, engraved by Sigismond Himely and under the direction of Louis Auguste de Sainson with Arthus Bertrand, editeur. "La Favorite" was one of several ships sent out by the France in the 1820/1830s to compete with similar expeditions by other countries. These were voyages with political/territorial objectives via commercial diplomatic, scientific and artistic means, intending to expand French influence particularly in Southeast Asia to counter British interests. Barthelemy Lauvergne (1805-1871) was a French painter, maritime, and landscape artist active in the mid 19th C.
