Description:
7.5" x 11" photo album with about 120 photos of the Japanese military, family photos, and snaps of people having fun. One photo shows a medical student or Doctor with a cadaver. There are many annotations added, but I have no idea what they say. Also, around ten photos are missing and some photos look to have been removed and another added. Still the photos are engaging and if you read Japanese, perhaps this tells a story.

Description:
14.25 x 11.5" spiral bound album with a brown plastic cover with "Photographs" on the front; the front cover is detached from the album. This album offers a glimpse into parts of Japan in the 1950s, including Chiba City, Katagai, Kawara, Matsushima, and Mount Fuji. The photographer took care to document aspects of Japanese culture and nature that they clearly found fascinating, including detailed photos of people preparing for Kabuki theater, rice fields, fishing boats and commerce, and beautiful architecture. Amongst the most exciting photos, there are images, including one taken at night, of Mount Mihara volcano spewing smoke, and lovely photos of the Ise Grand Shrine. There are 15 Kodacolor prints, some of which, though faded, show off the color of fields of spider lilies. There are also photos of G. I.'s on a train to Karuizawa, a man named Dr. Arthur Rinden, and a woman named Susie. There are a few empty pages at the back, and some pages are loose. Photographs measure between 3.25 x 3.25" and 6.5…

Description:
6" x 7.5" red covered photo album, with twenty mostly 3.5" x 4.5" snapshots from a bizarre fertility festival in Japan. Known as the Kanamara Matsuri, ("Festival of the Steel Phallus"), this yearly festival takes place each spring at the Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki, Japan. The festival started in 1969 when Sex workers prayed at the shrine for protection from sexually transmitted diseases. Nowadays, it generates money for AIDS research and has become a tourist attraction. There are several photos of giant male and female genitalia and of the festival. None are captioned or dated. These photos are probably from the first festival in 1969, or in the year or two afterwards. The last few pages of the album are unused and the front hinge is broken. The album appears to be complete and the photos are in very good condition.

Description:
Excellent unworn condition. 36 off-white leaves/72 pages, 3 leaves blank; 168 b&w photos, plus 12 tucked in; 4 photos appear to be missing (as found) Beautifully preserved photo album, documenting a Japanese teenager's school days; photos carefully annotated in up-to-down Japanese script. Perhaps the camera was a new and exciting toy, as many photos appear to be taken within a relatively short period of time. For one who reads Japanese it would be a cinch to follow the action, as the ink is not faded. We see staff photos; class photos, of dozens of schoolgirls all in uniform; photos of field trips to sites of geological and historic interest; many photos of our heroine in a garden; with her parents; her pet cat, dog and chicken; with close friends; on a beach; on stage with an acoustic guitar. Several photos show the classmates in more formal dress, in processions; this may indicate a communion or other religious rite (one of the captions, beneath pictures of a lakeside, indicates, in English,…

Description:
There are 45 color snapshots in this 10" x 11.75" vinyl photo album and scrapbook, which also contains clippings and ephemera. The album documents the show Grine Felder (Green Fields) by Peretz Hirschbein, which was put on by the Yiddish Club of Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1968. Most of the photographs measure 3" x 5" and are laid onto sticky pages and covered by plastic, which is typical of this time-period. The husband-and-wife team of Maurice and Annette Rosenthal produced and directed the play, with a cast of nine actors and it was performed entirely in Yiddish. Newspaper articles in the scrapbook reveal that this is the third year of an all Yiddish play put on by the club. Mrs. Morris Rosenthal converted to Judaism before she married her husband. After their marriage, she discovered Yiddish, and she mastered the language along with her husband. She soon organized a Yiddish club, comprising young couples who picked up the language and began talking in it and relaying it to their children. A…
